Not sure if i'm being immensly dumb here but isnt that under minimum wage for your age?

There are different levels of NMW, which depend on your age. The rates from 1 October 2008 are:
    • adults (which means people aged 22 and over) receive the full rate of £5.73 an hour
    • workers aged 18 to 21 inclusive, receive a rate of £4.77 an hour (often known as the developmental rate)
    • young people receive £3.53 an hour (often known as the youth rate)
A young worker is someone who is older than school leaving age and younger than 18. You are under school leaving age until the end of summer term of the school year in which you turn 16.

If he's working 20hrs a week for £400 a month, I don't think you want any tips for earning £5/hr... Hopefully it was a typo and he means £400 a week!

No, thats correct 20 hours a week, £400 a month (approx £5 p/h). I know its low at the moment but who cares? I dont have kids, I dont have a mortgage, I dont have to pay maintenance to an ex wife, I don't have a boss looking over my shoulder, and I couldn't give a hoot about keeping up with the Jones.

My partner works part time for the NHS @ an obscene hourly rate .... so I can afford to take time to build my business up. I'm not having a go at anyone here (each to their own) but while most of you run around in offices like theres no tommorrow because you have car finance, mortgages, kids, cable tv, and an appearance to keep up. I can afford to say !!!!!! today I'm going to put everyone off until tommorrow, the suns shining and were off to the beach. Who knows ... tommorrow I could be dead.

25 (I still have to get used to typing that); computer programmer, on £25k.

Got any tips on picking up clients? I'd like to take up technician/repair work as a sideline, but the major issue for me would be finding clients and work.

Your probably better off working for £25k .... to me it doesn't mean much, its only £2000 a month (or near enough) but take look at the grief that comes with your job.

I just started up for several reasons:
    1. I'm sick of looking over my shoulder.
    2. I was made redundant September '08 and the DSS weren't paying me anything (my partner earns too much).
    3. I can work when I want (within reason) and for who I want.
    4. I'm proving a point.
    5. I was getting sick and tired of working for rear end orrifices
    6. I needed to get out of the '9 til 5' routine
