  • 30, Cleaner, part time, £504.80 per month.

I have chosen to work part time because I have paid off all my debts and I like having time for myself in the week. Plus, all the money I earn is mine because I am not not earning enough to pay tax.

Even though it is low paid, I am alot happier as a person than when I was on £18k. My working day in this job starts at 7am and finishes at 11am. I have alot more time for myself and the company I work for they acknowledge bank holidays as opposed to other work places that where you have to work and do not get time and a half or a day off in lieu. I have been there since October and at Christmas I was given a bottle of Bollinger! This is a small family business and I have worked for big corporate companies and got nothing like that before.

I have no manager breathing down my neck, the area manager comes in once a month to just see how I am. I am self sufficient, almost feel self-employed and manage my time very well. No uniform, I can listen to my ipod as I work and never have any complaints from the company I clean for. If anything they think I am amazing and really appreciate me, it really humbles me. Something that is rare in the workplace nowadays.

When I was interviewed the area manager said that I was over-qualified for the job (having done credit control, debt collection and being a personal assistant to a director). I said I was looking for job satisfaction rather than loads of money. I hated working in an office where if I do a task and it would have to be passed on to another department, usually the colleagues procrastinate and I would get it in the ear from a customer when the delay was not my fault!

So in my current role, at least I can see all my efforts and it is up to me to complete them and in a satisfactory manner.

27, teacher with extra responsibilities, £29,639pa (rises each September). Good pension (for now...) and, of course, 13 weeks of holiday each year. Work 6 days per week: 4-6 hours on a Sunday, 12ish hours Monday-Thursday and 7:30am-3:30pm on Fridays (never, ever, ever do work on a Friday evening!).

According to Michael Gove, I don't work hard enough.
