Motorbike license??????

Hiya,

I am very interested in getting a motorbike, what test will I need to take to do so? I currently have a full clean car license. Is there a limit on the size of the engine that I can have.

Any advice would be really appreciated

Thanks

You cannot just ride a bike on a car licence anymore, I am afraid! The above website looks like a good resource.

You left it a bit late, a new Motor Cycle Test was introduced at the end of April 2009.. ;)

I'd recommend a chat with one of your local bike training schools. The new test has reduced the number of test centres at the moment and there's a bit of a list for appointments, but the bike training schools have managed to get some for people signing up for their courses.

Indeed, yet another " ill thought out " scheme by the DSA, which is going to add very little, if anything, to road safety.

When i did it, i had to take the theory & hazard perseption test again, then pay about £530 for 4 days training on a 500cc motorbike then fifth day Test. (In 2004)

Wow they introduced it then. Just read on DSA about the new test, looks like the dreaded U turn has gone :D (I still can't do them!).

    Hi Chap,

Just did mine in october/ november and passed... U turn is more a head doer than it is difficult.

Problem now is you have to perform more higher speed off road manouvers.

There has been a call to scrap the new test already as there have been over 16 cases of people coming off the bike, one rule i was taught was not to brake while cornering, and this new test forces you into the situation where you are basically doing that and in less than perfect conditions you slide off. one case of broke bones out of the 16.

    u need

    CBT 1 day £100-120
    theory test £30 ish
then however many days training you need say 2-4 days probably starting on 125cc like CBT and moving up to 500cc each day roughly £150
Test will be about 120-150 including bike hire and someone to go with you including the test fee of about £80

Its expensive, but if you budget for about 700 - 800 you will be there or there abouts. Also depends if you want to do direct access (any BHP) or only want to do test on a 125cc then your restricted for 2 years up to 33bhp, which isnt necessarily slow, but isnt "fast".

Cheap way, buy a brand new 125cc with a years free insurance they will CBT you and years insurance for £99 get the expereince you need over a year, and then take the big bike test, then chop the bike in for a new one over depending on the test, upto 33bhp if you do it on your own bike? or an R1 if you get direct access lol... JOKE, they arnt called widow makers for nothing lol

I passed my motorbike test when i was 16.
So it's nearly 40 yrs since i last rode a bike, seems ridiculous that a could get a big bike tomorrow and take it out on the road, or would i legally need to have a refresher course ?
