Does anyone know anything about the new car tax bandings mentioned in the budget yesterday. I have a 1.1 Rover Metro and I wondered if my car tax is now going to be cheaper?

My hubby moves to the new top band by just 1 g CO2 ! and he's got an ordinary saloon car not an off roader or 4x4!

silvercar.....check out if your hubby does move to the top band as I thought we were going to with one of our cars but I *think* hubby said the new top band is only for cars that are registered after the day the new top band comes into force. Our tax goes up a little bit for that car but not as much as I thought. If I find the info I'll let you know.

    Dear Folks

I have in addition to an MPV an old Dolomite Sprint 2.0 1974, any ideas how the GOV will work this out for RFT?

Go here for new tax bandings, http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/taxation.htm From what I can see the new top band only applies if your car was registered AFTER 23rd March 2006

It's all pointless really though is'nt it??

If you can buy and run a BMW x5 or similar, (£60,000), are you going to be worried by a small increase in road tax? No of course not, so is it going to help stop greenhouse gas emisions? No to that as well.

All that increases in vehicle taxes do is Pi55 people off and make them hate the government. We all need cars and until the price of public transport comes down and the service is better we will use the car for ever no matter how much it costs.
While I agree no one needs a Range Rover to pick kids up from school, taxing owners of such cars will not prevent them buying or using them as they have loads of cash anyway.
NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!

My hubby has another argument for the new tax bandings. Yes our car is a gas guzzling 3.5 litre sports car BUT we bought it mostly for weekend fun. He argues why should he pay more tax for our car that is only on the road at weekends than someone with a smaller car that is on the roads everyday?? He thinks that car road tax should go on petrol/diesel. That way we all pay for what we use for the amount of time we are on the road.

Phewww! car registered July '02 so he's safe from the top band.

What I don't understand is that the new car emission tables show his car as having much lower emissions than is shown on his tax renewal form.

Mercedes C200 Kompressor - if that makes a difference.

I save a fiver on taxing my little Jazz!
