For the milage you do, go for a Toyota Avensis Diesel. They are legendary. You can find a 53 54 model, 50k miles on the clock for about £4k.

Also their service interval is 15-20k miles, will save you lot of money.

If you don't belive me, go around town, see which cars taxi drivers drive.

vw/audi are pretty ropey nowadays, add high mileage and it could get costly

I meant to add this to my post. As for pglic's post you get that stage in life where a bit more comfort is more important than the most cost effective option. Probably around the time you start to notice the grumpy old men traits creeping into your life....:rotfl:

    Nevera truer word said!

Hence i've a 4 year old 535d as opposed to a new focus turbo diesel.

Everything you go to do though is expensive - rear tyres = £250 a corner, tax, servicing, insurance harder on fuel (20mpg round towns, 30+ on a run) plus theres more to wrong than on your average focus.

It all adds up over the course of a year...

Just to put the tyres alone into perspective, if i was doing 30K a year in my car and drove it for two years, it would need 12 rear tyres and 6 front ones. Thats 18 tyres @ £250 a corner (if i wanted to stick with the manufacturer fit Conti's) so that £4500, or £2250 a year in tyres alone.

In fairness i used a cheaper brand now but they're still £180 each, which would be £3240, or £1620 a year

You could pick up a low mileage astra sri 150 bhp diesel for that money :)

A lot of cars could manage 200K miles plus of the right kind of miles. Question is how much money is spent replacing brakes, suspension parts and all the rest of it that wears out long before engine and gearbox does.
Rarely does having 2 cars save money, but if you put a small cheap £1K car on the road to swallow the bulk of the 30K miles per year you could then put an £8K E39 5 series on the drive for weekend and occasional Friday use and the costs would be more bearable.
A 4 year old 530 doesn't cost much less per month than a 6 month old 530 broken down as a long term average monthly expense. The older £8K 530 is again only cheaper by 10%-20% per month than the younger car assuming an more average 12K miles per year. The older big cars biggest advantage is it ties up less of your cash while you have it.

My friend at work just picked up an 06 plate Mondeo 2.0TDCI estate at auction for £3600.

It has done 104,000 miles and looks very tidy indeed. Its lost near £14K in 3 years and has been serviced in accordance with manufacturers guidelines.

Loaded with cruise control, all round electric windows, mirrors, air con.

He has researched and is not a car person but took a friend along to the auction and came away with a good bargain.

Another 100,000 miles in 3 years shouldn't be a problem.

It's a Mondeo so it's the best car on the roads according to Conor...
