There are several Revo products that apparently support both DAB and DAB+ out of the box, but they cost at least £150 apiece. Of those, only the Pico Radiostation could be considered portable.0

It looks to me as though OP's father needs FM as well as DAB, FM will work in Cyprus and DAB is a bonus in the UK. Solve the DAB+ distraction by not spending a fortune, if it lasts 5 years along with the UK's antiquated DAB system, then all well & good.
Pure One Classic from Tesco Home Plus stores or Tesco Direct (collect from any store) - £57 in black or white.
Even has tone controls and an MP3 input plus the ability to pause/replay for 15 mins or so. And it goes LOUD.
Black ones were going for around £50 at Richer, often out of stock though.
Has low energy consumption (if you believe the bumf)
Chargepacks are available for portable use or use regular batteries, on FM eg while travelling) will give 100 hours of use0 -
