Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

Does he have WiFi at home? If so, consider the Pure Evoke Flow, big and solid (sounds better than similar-sized Roberts IMHO), has FM, DAB and WiFi (Internet) Radio. The last one can be become a bit of a hobby with 1000's of stations and genres around the world to chose from.

    £120 from Richer Sound

I think you have posted on the wrong forum- this is a moneysavers forum.
You say your dad wants to spend money ,and lots more than £10, but you don't say what he wants to listen to.
DAB is vastly over-rated (I have a few) and internet radio is probably the way to go. There are changes due in DAB which aren't being shouted about which other posters have referred to.
Do you think you are going to get quality in a battery operated radio?
Roberts are overpriced and playing the retro card for all they can.
Not portable but you can get a lot of radio stations with digital tv -terrestrial or satellite

He will be using it abroad as well - he is here a few months then in Cyprus a few months and so on.

No disrespect but there is a product for every pocket.

And as for money saving people can tell you how to save £10 on something that costs £100 or a £100 on something that costs £1000 - its all money saving.

I hear what you are saying about DAB

If he's going to be using it outside the UK then you really need to do some research about radios that can be firmware updated to support DAB+, as many countries seem to be abandoning the original DAB standard.

Problem then is (as I understand it) that if you update, it seems that you no longer have the ability to receive DAB, so it won't work in the UK any more - until they grasp the nettle over here...
