Not necessarily - it depends if it is flagged as a personal payment, or as a payments for goods/services.

Either way, if it is funded by a stolen credit card, it does not matter how the money is sent, it can still be done via chargeback.
Fees are also applicable to personal payments if they are not funded by a paypal balance.

I told the person in no uncertain terms that I would only accept one single payment. She has said that
"OK I can make a single payment on another credit card if you can leave it til next Tuesday?"

I shall not be holding my breath.

Hmmmm - and you are certain that it will be "her credit card" that will be used?
Or is this just buying her more time to get her hands on another stolen one?

Have you accepted the Best Offer - is it in your sold items?

If not - block the ID. From what you have said so far, the rat is bigger and smellier than ever!

Surely they can load their paypal account up first with the three separate sums, and then pay in one go? If they're genuine then they won't mind (assuming you're ok to hold on for a while).

Was it a buy now or normal auction? I'd do a second chance offer....

    That's what I was thinking.
You would have to wait for the 3rd payment anyway before sending.

It is a BIN with best offer but I have not accepted the best offer yet. It will not be accepted unless
    a) it is a single transaction &
    b) I am definately covered by the seller protection scheme by PayPal
    c) I get comfortable with the situation

being the seller makes Paypal itself not a secure method of receiving any sort of payment... the person who pays through paypal can always say there account or card was stolen... etc and paypal never questions the buyer...and takes money from the sellers paypal account..always.....

Check the best offer has not alread expired - they're only valid for 48 hours.

I'd seriously consider blocking the member from bidding again. There are too many red flags waving from what you have said so far.
