Receiving money via PayPal in 3 separate transactions?

All,
Is there a scam I am about to walk into here. I am potentially going to accept someone's best offer on eBay for an item of mine for £1,300. However, the person has said that they would like to to make 3 separate payments via PayPal. When I asked why, I got: "the three payments are because I am not working because of my disability. I am unable to make one full payment."
Never seen this before, is it because they are trying to fund the transaction via 3 separate methods of payment (eg spread across 3 credit cards) and all is completely legit?
or is there some kind of scam which I cannot work out?
Thanks all.

seems very strange
you will get hit with more fee's
what sort of item is it? if you dont mind0 -
Agree, it does seem strange. Fees should not matter too much for PayPal - it will be just an extra 40p (2 extra PayPals at the mandatory 20p +% of item).
It is a handbag. No comments please...;)
Just can't quite fathom why someone would spend that much on a handbag when claiming pverty due to a disability. It just seems all a little strange and don't want to get stung!0 -
Don't want to sound cynical but, could it be that they are paying on credit/debit card or similar and will be able to claim up to £500 per transaction if they do a chargeback on their card??? I don't know, it's just a thought that popped into my headGE 36 *MFD may 2043

Could be, I just don't know - I am in a real quandry (sp?) - the person has got 2200+ feedback but has never bought anything expensive before (well in the last 120 days according to goofbay) and is currently selling random items for between £1-30 on auction. When I say random, it is more like bric-a-brac and low value cosmetics rather than the usual scam people of high value electronics.
In my 9 years of eBay, I have never come across this before and am completely stumped!0 -
I'm not sure if this is a scam or not to be honest with you, but, could it posibly be that they will make 3 payments via paypal then request two back as once you have submitted tracking details once you can't submit the same ones again?
by the way, i don't know that you definately can't submit the same tracking details again but i suspect you can't, perhaps someone else can confirm if this is right or wrong?
i can't see a clear scam here but it does seem strange, i'd be wary if it was me...........0 -
Just say no. Claim you are not protected as a seller if they pay in more than one payment.
I'm not saying I don't believe the chick is disabled but people will say anything to get you to agree. I once asked someone why their postage was £10 if the item was tiny and light, and they claimed they were disabled and had to paysomeone to go to the post office for them!
True or false, it's not worth risking it. Make them pay in one transaction or file a NPB.Wins: Avene Protective Hydrating Cream; 2 x Calvin harris Tickets @ iTunes Festival.

Am now on hold to PayPal to see what they have got to say! Wish me luck actually speaking to a real person in the next 2 hours!!0

I take it all back - got through in 5 minutes!!
They said that if payment is split they I would not be covered under the PayPal Seller Protection Scheme.
That confirms it - no way am I accepting multiple payments. Thanks all for using you as my trusted sounding board!!0 -
Even despite the lack of seller protection my scam radar would have gone up the moment the buyer mentioned 'being disabled'. A real person with a disability would never mention that.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
