Why anyone (apart from die-hard DUP voters) would vote for Dodds after that shambles of an interview on Hearts & Minds last night is beyond me. The woman doesnt have a clue. The Daily Mail

Are the DUP that pressed for candidates that they put up Dodds for election?? Sorry but as stated many times before... In europe we need someone with Balls (I mean this metaphorically) I do agree that De Brun and Alistair would probably be the best bets.... the rest I think just wouldn't have what it takes...
Isn't it great that in this day and age we can start to get over the tribal differences and vote for someone who can actually do the job!!0 -

In response to this question, I think it's possible that your son would be best to contact the Electoral Office for your area as the closing date for being on the Electoral Roll for the upcoming election closed on 19th May but at least he would be on the Roll for the next election (which may not be too far away by the state of things at Westminster). Apparently there was lots of advertising to say we had to let the Electoral Office know of any changes of address/name changes due to marriage, etc. I believe the last time forms were sent out for completion by all households was 2006 so I'm sure there'll be plenty of people who won't have let their Electoral Office know of changes.0 -
I've been a Sinn Fein supporter / nationalist / republican (you pick the brush to tar me with) for many years. I've stuffed envelopes, knocked on doors and worked in polling stations.
I used to live in Newry, and now live in Belfast. Now that I've moved away from the parochial small town (sorry, city ) mindset, I find that my political attitudes have changed somewhat. But this isn't all to do with moving.
I moved around the same time they decided to stop shooting everyone and try to actually have a political debate about why we were in the state we were. My grandmother gave me some advice before I moved. She was a dyed in the wool republican all her life, but she told me to always pick a loyalist politician if I needed anything done, as they would work harder for a catholic. It looked good for them
Now that I live here (I call it home these days), I honestly can't say I could count on that any more. Doubtless there are some politicians who are in the job to make a change for the better as they see it. Some are in it for the money. Some are there because it's a family tradition.
I don't trust any of the current crop. Yes, one or two might actually be on to something. They might have decent principles and morals, but what use are they really? They aren't high profile enough for their parties to put them forward for the MEP posts.
I've never heard anyone say anything bad about David Ford, but would you vote for him?
David Ervine was a loyalist, but I liked him. He was honest enough to say what he meant, and was willing to listen to other points of view and take them on board. I met him once in North Belfast, and he struck me as a very genuine man.
I've also met a number of nationalist MLA's, and mostly they don't (there are a couple of exceptions!). But then neither do Junior or Diane Dodds. It's simply a family expectation that they go into Brussels.
Until we get to the point where it's a class separation like England, rather than what religion you are, these elections are meaningless. It's all 'I've got more friends than you have'.
If you really want to make a change for Northern Ireland (whether or not you like the fact that we're controlled by England, we live here and it is a fact), then look into the policies of the candidates. Don't vote Sinn Fein / DUP / Monsters of Rock because your da did. Vote for them because you like what they're trying to do.
Just make sure of one thing. You have a vote. Use it. As has been pointed out earlier in the thread, people are shot dead for voting in other countries. The fact that you can walk into a polling station and vote is a privilege. Don't waste that right, because people have suffered so that you could have that right.0 -

Oh. Dear. God.
Diane Dodds certainly will have mobilised the voters, alas it's the Sinn Fein voters.
I cannot believe that the DUP are reduced to putting someone like her up!0 -
I will not be voting. No Way. As far as I can see the public are doing more to help themselves than the politicians are. I would not waste my time and energy doing this just to get into a worse financial situation next year than we are this year.
The politicians only want our vote so they can get the big money (thats all it boils down to). They are not worried about helping me or you.

Sure, MEP's can make 6 figure sums in a year through EU loopholes, but that's a good reason to make sure the hardest working people (usually the smaller party) gets the job. Someone's got to do it.0
