I would guess fitting a new box at a franchised dealer will cost more than a '99 Audi TT is worth. I suggest get a quote from a non franchised dealer for a reconditioned box before making up my mind. You could advertise and see if someone is interested in the car as a DIY project.

  • Makes me glad I got rid of my 225 after 4 months, for a Chimaera.

Is this a joke? I do hope thats not common on Audi TTs. I wonder what the nature of the engine failure was?

    Not all VAG are crap.

My 92 Golf Mk3 1800 still going strong, just had normal home maintenance, still on original clutch, coming up to 100k miles. No big money spent.

hi, the older ones seem better, its anything from around 97 onwards that seems to be junk

Paint on my Golf was rubbish, used to chip off everywhere, top coat just wasn't stuck to the undercoat.
German cars are like Japanese cars, the manufacturers just never admit there is a problem, whereas British car manufacturers loved to rubbish themselves.

No there is a huge difference, Japanese cars rarely have a problem.

    British cars were utter carp..

VAG *used* to be bullet proof - as you're finding out with your 17 year old example. Too many companies sacrificed build quality for profit and have now paid the price - Mercedes are a prime example of this.

What exactly has 'gone' with the gearbox?

Gearboxes can be reconditioned, and second hand units may be purchased. Isn't the gearbox from the Golf R32?
Not sure if Im honest just been told needs a whole new unit! think i will get it fixed and sell it sounds the best option!
    Thanks
