HI All
As this is my first year growing anything i expected to encounted problems but didnt think this many:
1) My Jalapenos havent even sprouted. I planted them as requested, covered them with clear cling film etc but nothing at all - any ideas?
2) My mixed lettuce has grown to the size of cress and no more in the last week.
3) My Spring Onions have hardly broke through the surface of the soil - you'd struggle to see anything without looking really close.
All planted 2 weeks ago - should I have seen any sort of growth yet?? Am I doing something wrong?
My god I am terrible at this!

You are not terrible.
The jalapenos will probably take a little longer to germinate. IME chillis need alot of heat to come through.
Is the lettuce outside. If so that sounds about normal.
Spring onions are always slow for me too.
Honestly, it all sounds failry normal. You need to grow some patience.

Ha ha i suppose you're right - thanks for the reply.
I'm going to purchase a stand alone green house - one of those ones the size of a wardrobe or so. Plus I have more pots on the way.
I think its a bit late for tomatoes but what about herbs? Can I grow them now and how is best to start, window box or something?0 -
Just buy a couple of tomato plants from a nursery and stick them in your new greenhouse.
Herbs do really well in planters. Buy a couple to start you off like rosemary and thyme but there is still time to sow things like basil, sage, coriander and parsley.
Don't give up.

I'm new to growing my own too this year and my seeds haven't sprouted yet but I'm waiting patiently...next year I'll sow the seeds in March, I did leave it a bit late this year.Good luck with yours.0

You lettuce looking like cress is not right, if you mean the leaves are the same size and very close to the compost, then that's OK, but if you mean the leaves are the same size as cress and the stalks are the same tall stems as cress, then thats not right and they are leggy.
Transplant them into individual pots or modules. You may have trouble if they are very leggy, I would put them in slightly lower than they have been, but not all the way up to the seed leaves,
I'm presuming they are all in the same pot?Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
Hello Blakey - embarrassed to tell you that all mine have germinated and some
are about 8" tall. Just wanted tell you about a tip I read the other day that chillies like to be a bit pot bound so when they have put on some growth don't be in a rush to put them in a bigger pot. Just remembered, pinch them out too so that you get more stems.0 -

I love fresh herbs for cooking but I adore basil, have never sown it and I find the supermarket bought pots go moldy and die off often before I have used all of it. Would love to be able to just pick my own when needed.
I would like to grow it in a container so any tips on container size, type of soil and where best to position it, sunny/shade Is it an annual? Thank you.0 -
