I've noticed there are a few NHS employees posting on this thread and I know we have a few regulars from the medical profession. Can I please ask a question of all of you:

What key points need to be addressed to make the NHS more effective, more efficient and better value for money for the tax payer?

Well, we're becoming like a third world country. If we scrap the NHS life in Britain will deteriorate to an intolerable level.

This has got to be the way forward, the NHS in it's current form is unsustainable. I rarely go to hospital or the GP, but whenever I do it is rammed with oldies who are clearly there just to get some attention. If they were charged even £1 for an appointment (with a yearly cap as mentioned) you can bet suddenly a lot of them would find something better to do.

Before anyone starts, I'm not suggesting all old people in medical establishments are faking it, or that only old people waste NHS resources, but it's certainly one area where tax money is wasted.

Has it never occurred to you that oldies are more susceptible to illness and ailments than youngies, that is part of the reason why they die in the end. I really wonder sometimes

bumpoowee (oh, really!), of course your post is ridiculous and ageist - you can't say that all the old people are in Doctors' surgeries just because they want attention. The body does wear out - if you can get treatment to help with the pain, why not!

What's your point? I'm a bit confused as to why it's being suggested I have anything against old people; they are just young people who got old, I don't really care - my frustration is with those who waste limited resources in the NHS. Less of the drama please.

What is ageist is your assumption that older people are at the surgery for "a bit of attention" rather than because they need to be. It's already been pointed out that the old and the very young use a disproportionate amount of the NHS's resources which is why there are more of both groups at the surgery. Which bit of that don't you understand?

Once again, yourself and other posters I can't be bothered making separate replies to are only reading the bits you want to read, and not bothering to read qualifying statements or put it into context. Are you trying to get jobs at The Sun?

Once again in case you missed it - "Before anyone starts, I'm not suggesting all old people in medical establishments are faking it, or that only old people waste NHS resources, but it's certainly one area where tax money is wasted."

Of course I know and understand that old people are more likely to need healthcare - but does that mean they are all there fore valid reasons? Of course it doesn't. The fact you assume everybody is the same suggests you have far greater problems stereotyping and generalising about people without good cause than I do.

I'm starting to see why nobody gets along on this forum.

The vast majority of us pay more into the NHS than we will ever get out of it. It costs the country millions and billions of pounds.

    SCRAP IT!

It is an outdated, anachronistic, white elephant.

We are the only country in the world with it! Why - becuase every other government realises that it costs TOO MUCH MONEY and that it WASTES money!

Knowing plenty of doctors, dentists etc I can tell you that all our taxes are being wasted on initiatives, ring binders of dtat, schemes etc. Too much middle management - not enough front line etc.

Solution is simple - abolish the NHS - the tax that people lose from their incomes could get them private health cover. If some of the lower classes prefer to smoke, drink or inject their incomes instead of paying for health care then damn them. They make their bed and they can lie in it,

In this ever deepening recession decent honest people who are hardworking or retired may jolly well ask "why should I subsidise the health of people?" They are right.

Its time as a country that individuals got responsibility of their own and didnt rely on the state to help them out!

The money saved on the NHS could go towards tax cuts and improving other infrastructure improvements such as widening motorways and a better and larger armed forces.

Ive honestly never read such utter rubbish before...you dont have a clue do you.

Ive visted plenty of countries where the working classes suffer due too not having enough money too afford treatment/drugs.....what happends is the poor sods normaly sell everything they can or accept they have no choice and care for the person in question as best they can.

Why dont you buy private medical insurance and have your mouth sewn up.

Most of us get along on this forum - although we're prepared to make an exception in your case!

I just can't see why you would think that older people were at the doctor's surgery without a very good reason. It's more likely to be younger people who're going to be there for sick notes, whether they warrant one or not.

Another stupid generalisation. Quite a lot of people, even those that disagree on a number of key topics, get along very well. Maybe you should reread your posts, and think about the way you present your 'message'.

when you're ill and in need the last thing you want to have to consider is the cost ... it may be inefficient but i'd rather have it there than not.....

Having been a frequent user of the NHS, and quite regularly lately it seems, I'm thankful for the system we have :)
