Still got the same problem any ideas? Should I reboot back to factory settings? Would I lose all my pictures and music and vids? Would I have to install things like MSN again?

    Thanks

Bit drastic to do a factory reset! If you have a restore point then that's probably a better option but with a bit of investigation I'm sure the problem can be solved.

Have you installed any new software?
Check the properties for the file and see if it has any version info to identify who it belongs to.
Does the message still come up when you boot into safe mode? If it doesn't then disable your startup programs (Start->Run->msconfig->Startup->Disable all). Enable each one until you find the one causing the problem.

go back to an earlier restore point

    Use System Restore

After you've decided to use System Restore to revert your system to a previous state, start the System Restore Wizard and follow the prompts. To use the System Restore Wizard, make sure you're logged on as an administrator, and then follow these steps:

1.Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
2.On the Welcome screen, click Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.
3.On the Select a Restore Point page, select the date from the calendar that shows the point you'd like to restore to, as shown in Figure 2, and then click Next.

4.On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, verify that the correct restore point is chosen, and then close any open programs.
5.Click Next if you are ready to proceed or click Back to change the restore point.
6.The computer will shut down automatically and reboot. On reboot, you'll see the Restoration Complete page, and then click OK.

It is Vista that I have. Tried system restore and would only let me go as far back as 15th. Restore failed though!

Try copying the file to your Desktop and then deleting it from it's present position.

It's someone to do with DirectX Video Acceleration.

If something doesn't work after doing so, you can always replace the file or find a suitable replacement.

Windows Vista includes a utility that will scan your system for corrupt, changed or missing system files. Running this from the command prompt is much easier than booting off the dvd into repair mode.

To run this utility, you will need to open a command prompt in administrator mode. You can do that by right clicking the Command Prompt in the list, or by using the nifty keyboard shortcut.

Once you have an administrator command prompt open, you can run the utility by using the following syntax:

    sfc /scannow

    then return
