You will find that vista uses more memory so it runs faster, since you are running 4Gb ram go for vista.
As for a more basic screen, vista just looking nicer but you can quickly turn this off and have it looking very basic again.
The people who stay XP seem to be the same people who said stay 98 when XP came out and will soon be saying stay vista when 7 comes out.
On that front XP support will stop before Vista if you look in the long term.
Basically Vista is great, it works, its fast and its more secure. If somebody has XP and is happy with that fair enough, but when given the option of XP or Vista, Vista is the way forward.Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017

Stick with Vista .... until you get problems like not being able to rename folders etc... then change.

I have used vista form day one and not had any problems renaming folders, must be lucky. By all means a lot of people have had issues with vista, but don't forget just as many have had problems with XP. A lot of problems with Vista where sorted in SP1 and Xp was very much the same before its SP1.
It really is a silly move to downgrade an OS, in this case if the machine comes with vista just use it, you won't have any problems.Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017

If youve never even used Vista how can you say that??:idea:0 -
I used to hate Vista but its really incredibly similar to XP. Now I probably prefer Vista and its certainly less prone to crashing and when it DOES crash (Which is rare), it doesnt needed rebooting like XP does.
The BIG niggle factor is UAC (where Vista stops and thinks for a while which is majorly annoying)
Personally Ive switched UAC off and use decent security to compensate (NOT recommended, I do it as I have an idea what im doing
) :idea:0 -
I have used windows xp for years now. However, I had my shiny new Dell pc delivered this week with Vista Home Premium already installed. Because of the comments Ive read here I wasn't really looking forward to having Vista but I haven't had a problem with it. Its been just as easy to use as xp and Im quite pleased.
My advice would be to leave Vista on and see how you get on with it before you decide whether to put xp on it. You may find you like the new system and don't want to go back to xp and you may not have any memory problems either.

I turn the UAC off on vista purely because its annoying. I'd run vista is if came with the laptop, then upgrade to linux.0
