This has been covered to death on this forum, some like Vista, others prefer XP. Why not search and read the older threads...

PS what r/t graphics app, as long as it is Vista compat. you won't have issues.

PPS you'll only technically get the max of 3GB of RAM used by the OS.

Which version of Vista and XP are you getting? Are they the 64 bit editions?

my prog wil run on either, I have it on vista on my notebook at the moment and it was running happily on xp until the pc broke down. I just need to make a decision ie is vista really more stable and is it more memory hungry. I have done a search isofa and haven`t found anything to help. I am looking for objectivity ie which one scores the most points. Both choices are business standard

It is a brand new powerful laptop with Vista preinstalled - you have no reason to change to XP.
  • if i end up with vista for any reason i always get it changed back to xp.

Vista is more secure, better at managing memory, better safeguards that improve stability, better power management etc.

XP is more familiar to people.

Use whatever one you want. It doesn't really get any simpler.

I have decided to downgrade to xp, reasons being the lower memory requirements and more basic screen. I don`t need the bells and whistles of vista and I have good security etc so thanks folks as you helped me focus

and last but not least: my hp psc will run nicely on xp

Personally, I wouldn't upgrade my computer to Vista, cause it wouldn't be worth the expense. However, if I got a new computer with Vista on it, I wouldn't downgrade either. So basically, I would use either, depending on what was pre-installed!
