Broken Macbook Pro

My daughter knocked my macbook off the dining table last night, it already had a bit of wear and tear, scratches on the aluminium etc, anyways when I close the lid, the upper lid pops off at one side round the back and you can see things exposed, also I think this happens as a bit of the LCD pops out and creates a wedge when closed.

Is this repairable? Screw tighten? Or am I going to need to get the whole upper lid replaced? From a quick google I'm looking at about £900! But I think I can claim it off my house insurance, though it's a £200 excess I don't really have at the moment.

The laptop works in every other way, no problem at all, just the lid goes all dodgy when closed. So maybe I should just leave the laptop open always? I never take it out the house anyways.....

how old is it? If it's under 1 yr or you took applecare you can take it to the apple store?

I would partially dismantle and "snap" the parts together or dismantle and reassemble. Get the right small drivers though.
If you leave it alone things might be stressed inside...sorry you are to far away for me.

I did something similar with my old powerbook :o

Bent the lid across the back corner so that it wouldn't shut :( I fixed it by taking the lid apart (got a step by step online) and gently hammering the dented metal into just about the right shape. On yours it looks like the frame around the screen is causing the issue - that bit comes out completely so that you can hammer it flat. Worth a go. It only cost me about 3 hours and £4 for a little hammer to fix ;)

You'll need to be careful not to damage the ribbon that goes to the screen and will need a teeny tiny allan key for the screws.

It won't be covered by the warranty for that even if it is under a year old!

if they can fix it quickly I've found they will look the other way when it comes to accidental damage.... (ie: if it can be fixed there and then). but i might just have encountered a nice man ;)

My worst nightmare, may I suggest disciplining your daughter, LOL

No I would visit the apple store, they maybe able to help and give you a proper price, I have mine covered under gadget insurance from Natwest Bank and most things are covered, as is the iphone etc.

I don't have applecare and it's over a year old, not by much though.

I phoned a repair shop in Aberdeen and I described the problem and he basically told me that I'd need to get a whole new LCD and it can cost £500 upwards. I'm guessing more since mine is the 17".

I think you are right and it's part of the surrounding area of the LCD that bends when closed thus making it pop out. If I did take apart and attempt to fix it, I'm not sure if my house insurance would still let me make a claim on it since I'd been tampering with it. It does just need a bit of a bash in, and maybe a smidge of glue.

Well really it's the cats fault, as she was chasing the cat, it ran over the table, she attempted to follow and splat. No more catnip for it!

It honestly isn't difficult to take it apart and do it. I'll see if i have any pictures of mine (was bent much worse than yours). I'll find the link to the step by step too - that was really helpful.
