Yes, parasites are in most fish/meat and I'm amazed we don't hear more about them bearing in mind the damage they can do. Or maybe we just attribute the damage to something else
    http://scienceblogs.com/neurophilosophy/2008/11/removal_of_a_parasitic_worm_from_the_brain.php

That was interesting.I've heard of it happening before this lady when someone died because of a tapeworm cyst in the brain.
I'm surprised at just how many people don't realise that these parasites are not just things other people catch.
I know of someone who after going abroad trecking, caught roundworm,he knew nothing of it(apart from feeling a few stomach cramps now and then) till one day he was woken with something itching his nose. One had migrated upwards and had actually ended up halfway out of his nose.
It makes me shudder just to think about it.
  • One had migrated upwards and had actually ended up halfway out of his nose.
Made me think about that Swine Flu ad on TV where that man sneezes in the lift. Wow! That's something that needs catching in a tissue!
  • Anisakis worms, you get them in all sorts of fish, I can recall working in a restaurant when I was a kid and one of my jobs was pulling worms out of the cod flesh.

OMG that is disgusting. One of the places of high incidence is Scandanavia I notice. I have eaten loads of herrings in sauce there. They were my favourite food. But now I am a little afraid.

Fish that has been pickled or lightly preserved is often frozen for 24 hours at -20 ºC prior to processing. The freezing will kill off any nematodes (worms) present.

So, your herring should be safe enough...... ;)

Still a horrible thought though knowing your'e eating worms and take the risk of infecting yourself.
I don't know whether freezing will kill off the under developed cyst stage of tapeworm which affects fish too.
I'd be interested if anyone knows.

Who actually knows someone who has caught a parasitic worm from eating fish or anything else for that matter in this country?

Sounds like vegetarian scaremongering to me.

    Fish is good for you;)

Vegetarians can easily get worms, the eggs can be passed on through touch and in the case of thread/pin worm they can be breathed in.
There an awful lot of parasites out there just waiting to invade you.
Even your dog can give you tapeworm but I'm pretty sure cat tapeworm don't bother humans.
Our cat once sicked a tapeworm up,head and all.It looked like a poppy seed head with little hooky bits round the edges and was as thick as my little finger. It was still alive and it was standing up waving too and fro about four inches from the ground before it collapsed and died.Pretty sure I would'nt want one of them inside me.
We only knew she had one as segments kept crawling out her bottom and down her tail,I don't fancy that either.

    OK, just scaremongering then :D
  • It isn't scaremongering at all. Parasites are a fact of life.
