Hi could anyone explain the logic behind the situation I find myself in! My son is starting uni in Oct so for the first year only (as he will be 25 next year) it is based on my income. I have accepted that even though he has lived away from home for 5 years earning his own money this is how it is. I've provided income details for 16/17 and 17/18. I recently (in the last couple of months) separated (not sons father) but they want proof of this. Even though the income period is from when we were together. Where does this even begin to be relevant. They aren't using this year's income. Surely I should be providing both of our incomes? It's under the threshold anyway but I'm going to have to shell out for a proof of separation deed. Any advice gratefully received!

You can ask for a 'current year' assessment if it's going to make a big difference.

BTW, I am not sure if the assessment will change to him being 'independent' in his second year, or whether whatever basis it starts on carries on throughout the course.

This is not my area of expertise so you will have to hunt around the SFE website or hope for a more informed response.

Thanks Sue - it doesn't make any difference as the combined income was well under the threshold to contribute anyway. I was advised by slc that once he's independent it's assessed on his income. Which is why it makes no sense at all!!! Im even more confused having just lifted this from gov. Uk.as this criteria does not apply! He came back home for a short period after travelling this year but now lives independently. I'm wondering if he applied when here........
    What counts as household income

Your household income is your!taxable incomeplus the income of:

your parents - if you’re under 25 and live with them or depend on them financially
one of your parents and their partner - if you’re under 25 and live with them or depend on them financially
your partner - if you’re over 25 and live with them (even if they spend most of their time abroad)
  • SLC have to use the last complete tax year prior to the beginning of the course to assess income so that all dependent students are treated the same but, as you're separated now, it wouldn't be fair to ask for your estranged husband/partner's income, too. You'll need to check what can be accepted as proof that you're separated, but it used to be a decree nisi/absolute or council tax bill which shows the single adult occupant discount.

Hello I have a place at uni in september but have been refused student loan as i have been living with my relatives in Thailand not EU ,I am a British citizen born here but my father was unable to look after me as he is disabled and has been on benefits since his accident . I am now in UK with my father and the student loans company told us that i would be getting a student loan as my dads disabilities allowed a dispensation for the 3 year residence rule ,, but today we have been told that that is now not true ,, so now I am unable to proceed with my degree .

Are they wrong as we have been given conflicting info by the student loan company and the university says that as my father is disabled I should get funding .

what can i do ? I aleady have a job here but they are now telling me I cant study until I am 22 and gan have a loan

    any advice would be appreciated

You need 3 years residence not as a student to be eligible for loans even if British. Never heard of allowances being made for disability, only to those forced to travel with parents such as children of MOD etc

You'll need to work or self fund. You'd currently be charged as an international student anyway.

The Uni has said we have to pay £9885 before term starts in september . clearly impossible we have no savings and my work only pays minimum wage , so now all my plans are in tatters .

Thanks for the response. The issue is he is not dependent - he moved back onto my home for about 3 months at the start of this year following a break up - prior to that he was living with his girlfriend (and had his own council tax bill) before that they were travelling in India and prior to that living in a pub as assistant manager - from the age of 19. He applied for uni using the home address as a correspondence that is where he was at the time but is now stopping with a friend or working away through the week. I assume he will have to provide some form of proof of stopping at this friends and change his address on the application form even though by staying I mean literally sofa surfing. If someone can prove they have been financially dependent for 5 years prior to applying for the course why on earth is that not relevant!!!! All this for one year as from next he is non dependent! Hey ho.
  • Hi,

I have chosen to do a part-time MBA over the space of 3 years as opposed to 1 year full time. However, when I applied for student finance I was told that, because the pt equivalent was more than twice as long as the ft course, I was not eligible for funding (according to SFE, if the ft course were 2 years, for instance, I would get funding for the 3 year pt, but because the ft equivalent is 1 year only, I don't match the criteria for funding for the 3 year pt)

    Any help here?

    Thanks!

Have a look at career development loans. Nothing you can do about SF bar choosing to do the FT equivalent part time. Why are you spreading it so far?
