Hi Joistoan.
Has your son actually applied to be assessed as an independent student, then? There is a question in the application form asking the student if they have supported themselves for a minimum of 3 years prior to the start of the course.
I'd advise your son to call SFE as soon as possible and ask how he goes about changing his application to request an assessment as an independent student.
Apologies, but I thought your first post indicated that he'd applied as an independent student but been refused.
I used to be Starrystarrynight on MSE, before a log in technical glitch!0 -
Hi, I am applying to go to uni as a mature student (52), will I still be able to get a student loan and if so do you know if they do a credit check?
Thanks for any info0 -

I fell foul of this too, my distance learning MA was only 1 year FTE with the part time equivalent being 2-5 years. Fortunately my Uni brought in a special two year version of the course for people who wanted to apply for the PG loan. This is becoming more common, so I would ask at the establishment where you're looking to study and check around elsewhere if they have no plans to do this.
The downside of this is you have to complete in two years, which, realistically, I'm not going to be able to do. I'm currently getting around this by temporarily withdrawing from the course while I'm working on an assignment (you can do this any number of times, use pressures of work as your reason as they will expect to see a doctor's note for health reasons). This 'stops the clock' and postpones any outstanding loan payments until you resume your studies. By doing this I intend to spread out my two years over about three in real terms, which will allow me to complete successfully.
Good luck!0 -
Hi,
I’m not sure whether I have overpaid for the year of 2016/17.
I ear to 21195 that year and still paid 331 to student loan. Is this correct.
Thanks0 -

Do you have a plan 1 or a plan 2 loan? Sounds like the plan 1 threshold (which was around £17,000 in 16/17) has been applied.0 -
I have a plan 2 loan. I was told that I hadn’t overpaid though? But surely I should have only paid about 100?

The plan 2 threshold was £21,000 in 2016/17.
But it goes on monthly pay if you're paid monthly. 9% of anything you earn in a month over £1,750.
Did you earn more in a given month than the rest? If not, you need to make sure your employer's payroll are applying the plan 2 threshold and not the plan 1 one.0 -
I’m paid 4-weekly just to confuse matters even more.
I’ll get them to have a check which plan I’m on.
Thank you0
