Yes, I read it as that. When I put all the figures in, it said he could get £3575 maintenance loan. So, is this the amount that everyone gets outside London & living away from home? Or, does that figure include his £1000 grant?
No, the max maintenance loan for studying outsde london, not living at home is £2324. Are you getting confused between loan and bursary?
The maintenance loan is through student finance. As an nhs student, you only get half the amount that a non-nhs student is entitled to.
Which calculator have you put your details into, because if its the nhs bursary calculator, it gives a break down of what you are getting.
the £1k is on top of the nhs bursary amount (unless the nhs calculator detailed it in the breakdown)
Look at the link i gave above. Find your household income, then the column for 35wks, then add £164 to this (additional 2wks to make it 37wks). This is the amount you will be given by the nhs (non repayable)
Plus the £2324 maintenance loan from student finance (repayable)

Thank you. I will look at it now.

So ok, based on the figures and info you have put in on the above post-I have entered them into the NHS BOSS calculator http://www.ppa.org.uk/StudentBursariesCalculator/statusDecision.do
(not allowing for any tax relievable expenses you may be entitled to)
Basic award £2591
Extra weeks allowance £574
Total gross £3165
However because based on your income your contribution is assessed as £6541, your son would be entitled to the £1000 grant and his tuition fees paid for(from the NHS)
In addition to this he can apply for a non means tested loan from Student Finance which should total £2324
So in all he would get £3324 (£1000 non repayable and £2324 (loan) for the year.0 -

(not for me, just change in circumstances means that he will not be doing his 2nd year now and he has already applied for finance, I know he would not get any payments as he will not be registering at the uni but his partner is a student and her finance shows special support grant which she will no longer be entilted to and they want to get it sorted asap)
Thanks

I have applied to go to university to do a BA and have been accepted.
However, I have studied at a higher level before. I have got a HND in an unrelated subject, it was my understanding that it would be possible to study for a further year and complete a degree. The problem is that I did the HND over 20 years ago, my university wants me to start the degree from scratch. I have also contacted the Open University but the HND is too old to credit against a degree.
I am happy to do the whole degree but will the student loan company pay my tuition fees? I have spoken to them on the phone and they said that I need to write an appeal and get the university to write a letter confirming my previous study is to old. But they did not sound like they thought I would be succesful. I want to complete the BA so I can do a PGCE.
I will not be able to go without them paying all my tuition fees, has anyone heard of them paying the fees if people have studied previously? I would be grateful for any help or advice. Sorry to post this twice but I did not get a reply before and I am desperate. I cannot find any information about this anywhere, surely somebody must know the answer.
Sorry I really don't know the answer to this one. Maybe if you were to start a new post on this board someone with the answers may be able to advise.0 -

eg I did a degree a loooooong time ago in the days of means tested grants. I would not be eligible for student finance today. My friend had rich parents, and did not receive any student finance. She would be eligible for student finance today.
And if the degree is in a completely different field to the HND, I'm not really surprised the Uni want you to start from scratch. It wasn't unusual to do an HND and then convert it to a degree with a year or two of additional study 'back in my day', BUT it was usually in the same field, not a completely different one.
No idea about the chance of an appeal succeeding, but I'd suggest it was worth looking at all the available ways of entering teaching.Sorry I really don't know the answer to this one. Yes, that's what I think now.0 -

I think there is something wrong with the calculator because if you go here https://www.gov.uk/nhs-bursaries/what-youll-get it gives the same figures as i detailed earlier0 -
The key question is not 'have you previously studied at a higher level', but 'did you receive whatever form of student support was available when you previously studied at a higher level'.
Thanks for answering my query. I did get a means tested grant so not holding out much hope I will get a tuition fees loan now but worth a shot. I need a degree if I want to teach but doesn't look like that will be happening.0 -
