I'm sorry :( as I said, at the time i was intending to move out. the forms are filled before you even apply for any accomodation. I just thought since its a loan it wouldn't make a difference.

It may be a loan but an enormous number of students don't pay it all back.
  • Hi,

I'm looking for some advice for my brother.
He has been to university before, but dropped out of going in his first year due to family reasons.

He is now 28, and wants to go into Mental Health Nursing. As he doesn't have the appropriate amount of UCAS points to go straight to university, he will need to do an access to nursing course at a local college.
Having spoken to them today, 24-30 year olds have to pay £3200 for the course fees.

Does anybody know what sort of options are out there for finance for him?
He can't afford the £3200 and we are unsure whether he will be eligible for student finance or grants due to the fact he's had (albeit it was cut short) higher education before.

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks in advance,
    Luke.

Has he checked with the university that he'll actually need to do an Access course? Entry requirements for mature students are much more relaxed and he has been to university before. UCAS points are largely irrelevent to mature student entry.

Yes, we went to Wolverhampton, and they state that he doesn't have enough points to be able to go straight away, and recommended the access course first.
For the most part, I agree, they're more relaxed, but what we've found is, this isn't the case for those who have been to university before under government grants/student loans, and have dropped out. Hence the question regarding finance options.
He wants to begin the access course straight away, so we're looking to try and find funding asap.
  • I wanna study and i am over 24. Can i get student finance, maintainace loan, maintainance grant and other grants if i study diploma or access course level 3.
  • Government started a new scheme which is called 24+ finance or something that will bear the expenses of course. I am also thinking to do a access to higher education course but i dont about grant.

I think that this is what you're looking for and there's an 0800 helpline number for further information.

I am hoping someone can help please?

My daughter is planning on going to Uni in sept this year, she will be living at home and commuting, we are due to apply for finance in next few weeks but I am lost as to what income I include and what I dont include.

We receive some tax credits which I believe we include however a chunk of this is a disabled element for my youngest son who also receives DLA
So do I include all the tax credits or deduct the disabled element?

I assume we dont include the DLA as that is my sons?

And do I include child benefit?

I asked at the university today but they didnt seem to have a clue.:)

I've just filled mine in. It just asks if you get child tax credits, it doesn't ask for any details about them. It doesn't ask about child benefit, just if you have dependents. It's actually a fairly simple form to fill in, you need your P60 and if they want any more information they will tell you. If you have any problems with it you can always phone them. They can be an absolute nightmare when things go wrong, but when things are fairly straightforward there shouldn't be too many problems...

When i filled in the forms recently, it didnt ask for child benefit and tax credit amonts, it just asked if you claim them.
