Hi there, I'm new to this site and want to thank you very much for giving free student loan advice. I'm 19 and have just begun may second year of my undergraduate degree. I currently live with my parents at home. I'm getting married next August but will still be living with my parents for quite some time after the marriage until my husband and I can afford to rent somewhere. I was wondering if I'd be classed as an independent student next year (because I'd be married) or a dependent student (because I'll still be living with parents, not my husband).
Thanks very much!

It just depends how long have you been living by yourself. I've been getting hell from SLC because I've been financially independant from my parents (we're estranged now..hence independant) for about a year now. I sent mine off and it's taken them 2 months to assess me, and still are (i've sent it 3 months ago and it took me a month to be put into the system....the horrible bit is because I'm not getting any form of help from my parents, I can't prove my parent's income and they'll only do a non-income assest me.
But if you're really lucky to have worked 3 years in full time employment, have your own p60 form to prove it, married and living with your partner or over 25, then you'll be classed as independant.
The SLC people were not very helpful when they said "get referance from your social worker or connexions advisors" as i'm too old for social service involvement (aged 19) so am going for help from connexions advisers instead. my options are pretty much limited, been liasing for months with lsc so have a lot of useful info if you need it.Impartial view on electrical deals!0 -

We have been told by some LEA's that it can take 8-10 weeks for new application to be processed, that also depends on if your means or non means tested and also how busy your LEA is.Hi there, I'm new to this site and want to thank you very much for giving free student loan advice. Once your married you will be classed as independant and the assment will not be basesed on your parents income, it might be on your husbands but because it is household income and your husband isnt living with you then i dont think they will ask for your husbands income when the time comes. check your LEA.But if you're really lucky to have worked 3 years in full time employment, have your own p60 form to prove it, married and living with your partner or over 25, then you'll be classed as independant.
It is a pain this independant rule when your under 25, to be classed as independant you will have to either be supporting yourself financially for 3 years and you must provid evidence ie 3 years of p60's, wage slips possible bank statments. Or you have to be married/civil partnership, or have dependant children or finally be estranged from your parents for which evidence is required ie reference from social worker/connexions advisers/counselor. These rules are set out by the Department of Education and Skills so there is nothing that the LEA or SLC can do but follow them. If you can be classessed as independant with the above then you will have to have a non means tested assessment.I've been getting hell from SLC because I've been financially independant from my parents
Please don't confuse SLC and your LEA, we dont assess your application it is your LEA, we can only give out advice on what you need to do. Also i think there is a law (i know there is in scotland) that the parents have to support the child's education until the age of 25 and thats why the age of independance is 25.0 -
Hi,
My brother applied for his student loan on 29/06/2007 (as stated on the website) but he still hasn't received this loan! It states on the website "We are waiting for documentary evidence from you", though no one from the SLC lines can give information about what is missing. My parent's have sent off their information and received it back already and my brothers sent off his information and already received it back but its still stuck. Is there anything we can do or do we still just have to wait?

Hi Jonaid,
Your brother should ring his local authority directly rather than calling SLC/Student Finance Direct. They should be able to advise him on what else is needed.
Best Wishes

Hi, I was wondering if I could get some advice.
I am in my second year of a three year degree course and when I applied for student finance for my first year, I decided to not be means tested so I just received the basic maintenance loan I could get. However, for my second year I read what extra things I would be entitled to based on my mum's income such as grants etc. When I filled in my online application I chose to be means tested and they contacted my mum for evidence, which she sent off, and they received. When I received my final letter I got exactly what I got last year, just the basic maintenance loan when based on my mum's income I'm sure I should get the maintenance grant aswell. I really need to sort this out as I can barely afford to live just off the maintenace loan.

It seems that this year a lot of the 'awaiting documentation' messages are to do with students not receiving/sending back the declaration (at least at our Uni that seems the case). Has he sent this back to the SLC?0 -

Some possible reasons for this;
1-Your Mum's income is above the threshold
2-An admin error by LEA/SLC
3-Even if you fill in all the forms, if you haven't ticked the right box for income-assessed, they can't process the income-assessed award
4-Something else entirely!
What is your mum's income? This info will help with whether is it option 1.0 -

Her income is below £15,000 because she's a student herself now and was when she sent evidence. I definately ticked income assessed because surely they wouldn't have asked for evidence off my mum if I hadn't because they didn't last year.

Ok, something must have gone wrong then. Does your mum have a partner living in the same house? If so their income will be taken into consideration. If not, you need to contact your LEA to find out why you have only received the basic award, it might be something like a case of lost paperwork. Your Uni/SU should have advisers that can help you with this too.0
