  • I took out a student loan in early 2006 and began my course in September of the same year. Around 10 months later I left university and stopped the income of my loan. I was still eligable to pay back the years tuition and maintenance.

In 2008 I had a decent job (all be it under the 15k threshold), and for some unknown reason I paid £1,000 to slc even though I never actually had to. At the time this seemed smart, but a matter of months later I was made redundant but quickly found another job (again, under the 15k threshold) ...

Fast forward to today and I have been made redundant a few more times from other jobs and have never had an income which is over the threshold (EVER). I am now self-employed and have been for a short time (As you can imagine, I'm still starting out and am not earning much). The money I paid to slc in 2008 would really come in handy if I could have it back (HA!).

Does anybody know if I'm eligable to get it back? I have never earned over the threshold, my payment to them was out of fear more than anything due to my misunderstanding of how the system worked. If I didn't need the money then I wouldn't dream of enquiring for it back, but circumstances must etc.

I doubt I am eligable to get the money back but I have looked around and can't seem to find any solid advice fitting to my situation.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I am hoping someone here can offer some advice as am in a complete panic. DD has applied for Uni and been on Finance site, even though we are all English born and bred, we lived abroad for 2 years because of work and returned in July 2010. Due to circumstances I wont go into here her father has remained working overseas. According to the Finance site because we have not lived in UK for past 3 years and one of her parents still works overseas she is not entiltled to a penny. There is no way I can afford to pay her fees etc. Any ideas???

And the nature of the work?
Was it a temporary contract, or permanent?
Did you maintain property in the UK during this period?

working for British company advising UAE Govt and yes we did and do still have house in UK and were paying tax on UK pensions during that period. The contract was on a rolling basis and could come to an end this July.

It's an interesting one. Give me a bit of time to properly check the regulations, as I'm in two minds. May need more information though.

Thank you Taiko, anything would be useful. It does seem a bit unfair as she has lived for 16 of her 18 years in UK and her dad only left to work abroad rather than take redundancy and go on benefits (know its a loan not a benefit). She could now be penalised for this and she didnt have a choice at the time and we never considered something like this at the time.
