It states the 3-4 working days on the entitlement letter too, so its not like they don't warn you.0

POsting this for my son who doesn't have an MSE account.
He's just started year two (of three) and his student finance is showing as "approved to be paid on September 19 2011" but he hasn't received any money yet.
He spent the day trying to speak to them yesterday without sucess and he has a PAYG phone and no landline so doesn't want to use all his credit. I know they won't speak to me.
His housemates are saying he won't get the money until 3-5 days after he has enrolled (tomorrow).
Is this right? He's sweating on the cash a bit.
I know people in 2nd/3rd year who have their loans, and those who don't. His best bet (if he can afford to) is to enroll, and see if he gets any loan withing 5 working days. If he doesn't, then he will need to call someone, which I know is not ideal. Some universities may allow him to use a phone free of charge if he explains the situation to his personal tutor, etc.0 -

Son failed 2nd year of his degree course and has to resit one module over the next academic year. The university has said this will make him a part time student studying between 1 - 2 days per week.
He has already signed his accommodation contract for next academic year (as you do) and paid deposit, assuming he would be going into his 3rd and final year. I am trying to find out if he is entitled to any maintenance loan/grant to help towards his accommodation, travel costs etc. His tuition fees of £400.00 we can cover for the year, but not his accommodation or transport. Have answers ranging from he'll get nothing, he'll just get maintenance loan, he will be reassessed depending on course intensity. He doesn't know whether to move into his accommodation or not! We live over 200 miles away, so transport is expensive and needs to be done day before to get him to 9am lectures. Please help.
He may not get anything at all if it is just one module. This happened to someone I know, but luckily he lived at home, so not such a massive issue. If he has signed his contract, then he will probably be liable for rent now until he can find a replacement, so he may as well move in.0 -
Thanks all. He won't starve, but on the web site, under the glossery it doesn't mention enrollment, it just says that approved means "approved to be paid on the date stated" which is September 19th."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0

...but on double checking, the letter did.
Looks like I'll be subbing him. Again."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0 -
hey, if anyone could help me, i'd appreciate it greatly. i've spent hours on the phone to student finance & have even spoken to my university, but nobody can seem to be able to help me....
i'm currently going into my 2nd year at uni, and this summer, i applied online for student finance, providing all the information from my parents P60s, as i wanted them to support my application in the same way that they did last year.
when i received a letter containing my estimated amount of loan, it is £1350 less than last year, eventhough my parents income is actually lower, and i don't have any extra savings to support myself.
after several million conversations with customer services, they discovered that this was because, for some unknown reason, eventhough they were aware of my parents income for last years application, my household income was put as £0.00, and so i must have been given the maximum amount available to me.
so, this year, the information has been processed correctly, and the estimate is correct.
but, £1350 less is much less than last year and if my application had been processed correctly, i may have considered deferring my studies and get a job to earn some extra money as the money i am due to get this year, literally will cover my rent/travel back and to to uni. it will not cover any living costs - food etc.
i told them i appreciate that people make mistakes and computer systems don't always work, but this leaves me in a very difficult position, as i'm now going to be getting LESS funding, eventhough costs have risen.
they then basically came to the conconclusion that i'd been overpaid last year, and are going to take that amount of this years funding. without looking at the 1345355 pieces of correspondence from them, i think this issues leaves me with about £1846 less than last year, meaning i'll have to quit uni as i literally won't be able to afford to live in london anymore....
any idea on how i can help resolve this as i'm literally banging my head against a brick wall....

Pay up.
SFE are entitled to do this, as per the regulations. What is going to make it worse is that the overpayment will be reclaimed from this years funds.
I'm afraid you don't have a leg to stand on.0 -
incase you hadn't noticed taiko, i was asking for any help/advice. after all, this is my future we are talking about. i don't really appreciate your blunt response considering the situation....0

Ok, I'll dress this up a bit.
You'll not be asked to repay anything, as it was the SLC's fault. To make amends for their mistake, they're going to waiver your whole debt, buy you a BMW, pay all your fuel costs for 10 years, give you multiple houses, including ones in the south of France, and supply you with butlers. You'll have chocolate and marshmellows at your beck and call, and will never ever have to worry about anything ever again.
Is that the answer you were looking for?0 -
