So, will they take the lot, or is it a percentage?
it's a completely different system; once you earn enough to start paying back, they split the amount over 60 months equally. it's usually referred to as a mortgage style loan. the threshold is higher (about £26K atm?) but so are the repayments (and indeed, the total and usually, so is the interest rate).

so many different loan systems..... so confusing!

have existing loans been changed to include an early repayment charge? I thought it was just current / next year's students?

No, and early repayment charges haven't even been clarified for next years yet either.

children starting Uni in different years do seem to get different amounts.

Key question to ask re: how low it is, have you managed to submit your financial info OK, and has it changed since the eldest started?

  • Have now spoken to student finance a grand total of 6 times in one day and each time I have had a different answer. Don't know who to believe anymore.

Son failed 2nd year of his degree course and has to resit one module over the next academic year. The university has said this will make him a part time student studying between 1 - 2 days per week.

He has already signed his accommodation contract for next academic year (as you do) and paid deposit, assuming he would be going into his 3rd and final year. I am trying to find out if he is entitled to any maintenance loan/grant to help towards his accommodation, travel costs etc. His tuition fees of £400.00 we can cover for the year, but not his accommodation or transport. Have answers ranging from he'll get nothing, he'll just get maintenance loan, he will be reassessed depending on course intensity. He doesn't know whether to move into his accommodation or not! We live over 200 miles away, so transport is expensive and needs to be done day before to get him to 9am lectures. Please help.

Is he required to attend lectures? Is it his first repeat? Any previous courses before this?

POsting this for my son who doesn't have an MSE account.

He's just started year two (of three) and his student finance is showing as "approved to be paid on September 19 2011" but he hasn't received any money yet.

He spent the day trying to speak to them yesterday without sucess and he has a PAYG phone and no landline so doesn't want to use all his credit. I know they won't speak to me.

His housemates are saying he won't get the money until 3-5 days after he has enrolled (tomorrow).

Is this right? He's sweating on the cash a bit.

    Correct.

No money will be released until the university have confirmed that the student is in attendance.
