I'd have classed it as a year two, as you cannot be mixed-mode for finance purposes. Should be fine if no previous courses/repeats.

I believe that is correct, not sure about tuition fees, you'll have to ask your university.

If I were you, I would get a part time job alongside it, doing 2 modules over the year will leave you will a lot of spare time, so you should at least do something proactive! :)

Thanks. I already have a part time job, but was mulling this over and was thinking about getting a full time if I have to re-do the modules. I wouldn't in practice actually have to go to the lectures (so my lecturer told me) so long as I complete the asessments. This means that I could get a full time job in an area that would give me some experience for when I do complete my degree and I wouldn't need to rack up more student debt - if I was working I wouldn't need the maintenance loan and probably wouldn't need the fee loan either.

Im afraid not, the only postgraduate that is entitled to support is a PGCE.
I'd advise contacting your Uni or Local Authority....

Hi - this was posted 5 years ago and I wonder if there is any change?

I have a BA and an MPhil - I've applied to do a PhD which has a studentship, although I am respnosible for paying the tuition fees.

I want to know if I can apply for any tuition fee loan for this, any standard student loan (for living costs etc), any parent support grants or loans (I have two children aged 9 and 4). I've been given conflicting information from Student Finance; some say "we don't fund PhDs at all" others say "We will fund the course as long as it is higher than what you have already achieved". There's also conflicting infomation about whether any support for parents is means tested or not etc etc etc....

I hope you can help. The position of student finance on these matters will probably determine whether I can realistically do the PhD or not.

    Thanks

    Not eligible, course isn't designated.

Not that I'm aware of, although there are more expert people than me around ...

Again, as far as I'm aware, Student Finance never has funded anything higher than first degrees - so that might stretch to a Masters if you're doing that as a first degree (1 son with an MEng, another heading for an MMath) but not to an MPhil or a PhD. These never have been funded by the same system as first degrees: there used to be entirely separate grants for them but they weren't guaranteed and I'm sure the systems have changed completely since I was in this field.

It would be worth talking to the institution you plan to study with: they may say "well we're offering you the studentship, what more do you want?" or they may know of places you can apply to.

There are also Career Development Loans, which I think you talk to your bank about, but be aware that with these you need to start repayments pretty much at the end of the course, regardless of whether or not you're in work at the time.

I'm not sure what effect your studies would have on things like tax credits. Do you have a partner in work? because that would also affect the tax credits thing.

I don't think you'll be able to apply for student finance for a PhD, though as Savvy_Sue said you may be able to apply for a Career Development Loan.
Some postgraduate study is funded but I don't think PhDs are.

Our younger son will be starting university in September 2011. We are a married couple aged 61. I am in full employment on a modest public service salary and my wife has this year started receiving her pension, having not been working for some time.

Will the assessment we have been given for student maintenance grant and loan have taken account of the pension as income ?

Whilst grateful for the financial assistance given, we are alarmed that this finance will only cover accommodation costs, leaving nothing at all for food.

Your advice and comments would be welcome.

    Thanks

there are no student loans for PhD study. either the stipend will have to cover the fees or try other options like a CDL. get in early in the academic year and ask whoever organises undegrad teaching to see if there is any seminar work available. working part time during a PhD is very hard - perhaps only do-able in the first year and certainly a bad idea in the third. speak to your department - it's unusual to offer a stipend without also paying for the fees so get that in writing. they won't give you the money for the fees, but they should normally cover them in the stipend package.

  • Hi,
I am going to be a Student under the age of 18 for most of my first year in University. I noticed that in all the best Student Bank accounts posted on the site require you to be over the age of 18 to be eligible. What would you recommend for me to do in this case?
    Thank you

    Get a normal account.

You won't be entitled to an overdraft as you are under 18 which is the main thing that student accounts offer.
