Hi,
I'm going to post a separate thread on this subject, but wanted to attract you there first: seems like you might have some insight on this matter.

Hi, I wonder if anyone could confirm something for me. I may be in the position of trailing a couple of modules at the end of my second year (Just sat my exams which were the first attempt as I had mit circs for the May exam board). I may need to retake these modules and probably can't trail them into my 3rd year. My student finance for my 3rd year is already in place and I understand that I can get up to 4 years funding to allow for a repeat year? My question really is just if someone could confirm that this is still correct, and also I won't be repeating the whole year just 2 modules, so would I only apply for tuition fees loan to cover the cost of the two modules (pro-rata of the cost of the full 6 modules I am guessing?) and would I also get the max student loan/grant as my degree is still classed as full time, even tho I'll only be doing 2 modules? I hope that all makes some sense and thanks in advance for any info.0

Sorry if this is a completely dweeby question...
My son has just been accepted to do a BSc at Plymouth, and we have received all the enrolment blurb from them.
He has had confirmation of his student loan - they just need his bank details.
However, on the Plymouth blurb, it has a section about sending in copies of the letter received from your local education authority. I remember that we were asked who are local authority was when we were completing the student loan application, but we haven't received anything from them.
Should we have????!!!!!!
I'm just asking because when I was at university MANY years ago, obviously your grant was paid by your county: I can remember queuing at the "Dorset" desk at the beginning of every academic year to get my grant cheque.
If anyone can shed any light on this, I'd be very grateful :T0 -

Student Finance England now administer the student loan stuff so I think Plymouth will just want to see the payment schedule/confirmation of finance - basically they want to know they'll get paid tuition fees. The fact they're asking for the LEA letter is probably due to them not updating their blurb when the system changed from LEAs to SFE.0 -
I wonder if anyone can help me (crosses fingers)
i previously started a uni degree in 1997
basically i failed 2 modules in the 1st yr so my 2nd yr was just repeating those but due to health and personal issues i didnt complete them - the uni accepted my reasoning and let me back on the course again to do just those 2 modules - however my health was worsening still and i gave it up as a bad idea.
im still ill but have now got a good hold over the problems - in effect i dont let them ruin my life even if they do spoil some individual days (the illness is fibromyalgia if anyone is interested) and am now looking at going back to uni (with my doctors approval)
I did think id probably have to do an access course but following an informal interview and submitting some pieces of written work done for a blog, ive now been accepted on a course (different course, same uni as before) that i love the look of. BUT im somewhat concerned about finance and the student loans company.
ive heard differing stories - some say you cannot do a 2nd degree and get a student loan for the tuition fees, some seem to say you cannot get tuition fee loans on a new course if you started the 2nd yr of a different course and yet others say that whilst 1. or 2. is correct the student loans company have some discretion if the circumstances are right.
now im not even sure what category id fit into - in effect though i was there for between 2 and 3 yrs i never actually completed the 1st yr so hence never started the 2nd.
i really want to do this, ive dug myself out of a hole i never want to get into again and am moving on with my life.
Im taking the education route for several reasons both personal & private and also for a way of proving to potential employers of the future im capable of fullfilling a role and sticking with it despite an ongoing illness.
any help here would be most appreciated (positive or negative its all helpful - though please dont tell me i shouldnt be going to uni)

Oldernotwiser: I'm afraid not, it's a Drama degree, so it's not really something you can study part-time. Looks like a trip down the Job Centre really, because there's just no real solid advice out there. I get the impression that we're entitled to a reduced amount, but I can't even start looking for a place to live until I'm sure I can afford it. Otherwise I'll be paying 100% of the rent, for both our food, clothes, bills and my travel. I sometimes think it's deliberately confusing to put people off!0

I believe that is correct, not sure about tuition fees, you'll have to ask your university.
If I were you, I would get a part time job alongside it, doing 2 modules over the year will leave you will a lot of spare time, so you should at least do something proactive!0
