I left university last year and i before i decided to quit i went and signed a house share with my two mates. now i have left i have no student maintenance loan to pay for it and i am on a part time course and on a part time loan but that only pays for the course. No maintenance allowance. i am struggling to pay the rent on the house and wondering if student finance could help with a maintenance loan so i can pay my landlord. Or will i have to go somewhere else like bank loans to del with it?
Thanks

You should be paying your rent by working or claiming benefits. You won't get any money from the SLC.0 -
Hi,
I'm a full time student currently in the final year of my course. I'm studying to be an architect, which in total is a 5 year course which qualifies for support from the Student Loans Company for its duration.
I previously failed the 2nd year of my original degree. This was because I was immature and stupid, no excuses. Thankfully, I learnt from my mistake and passed the next two years successfully.
I enrolled to uni in 2009-10 to undertake my professional diploma in architecture, which forms the last two years of my academic study. Unfortunately, I failed the first year of my diploma although for completely different reasons. Basically, I have twin 10 year old sisters and my father is in enforced retirement because of debilitating arthritis - during the last 4 months of my course that year I went home every weekend to help with my parents, and although I thought I would get by uni work wise, eventually received bad news when I was given my final grades for that year.
My family situation has improved since then, my stepmum has quit part time work and looks after my sisters and dad full time. I'm happy to say that I passed the 1st year of my diploma and currently undertaking the final 5th year of my course. However, this year the student loans company has only awarded my £4500 for the duration of this academic year (£500 per month) and although I have worked hard to looking at alternative ways to support myself and pay my fees, I've come to the conclusion that as things stand, I will drop out in the next few months because of my lack of funds.
I intend to appeal, as a last throw of the dice, I don't know what else I can do now. Having written a letter detailing my circumstance, I was hoping someone with experience in these matters might review the letter for me, to advise on what additional information I should include or how I might re-write it in order to maximise the chance that my entitlement from the SLC might actually be reviewed. I'm pretty desperate, and would be grateful for any assistance or advice anyone can give me.
If anyone is able to help, please let me know and I will pm you my draft letter.
Kindest thanks in advance,
Will0 -
You'll need some evidence to back things up. Doctors notes about your dad would probably help the case here.
I can't say yes you would get it, but I can't say no either.0 -
Hi Taiko,
I'll make sure I ask my dad's doctor to provide a note as evidence, and make a mind of providing documentation for everything that I put in the letter. Thanks for the advice.0 -
My daughter is in 2nd year of uni (England/not London) and has maintenance loan of £3564, 28% less than full amount as family not filled in earnings part (mainly as husband and I earn more than the higher figure together wages).
Question is - if we had filled in the extra info, would she have got total of £4950? We have been paying her accommodation so she's not as skint as many of her friends.

May have, depends how close to the threshold you were.0

This topic maybe the right place for me to post my first forum. I am glad to hear your thoughts and opinions and hope that you will also guide me in posting.
By the way, my English grammar is not too good and I need your understanding.0 -
Hi,
If I have two jobs (one full time PAYE) and one part time Self Assessment, how is the student loan contribution calculated if I make a loss in the part time job. For example, I know that if I make a loss, the tax I pay is offset against my full time employment so I get a tax refund from what is paid by PAYE.
Is this true of student loans? I.e. Am I paying too much student loan from my PAYE if I make a loss in my part time job?
Thanks, Mre.0 -
Hi all,
I am currently a home owner (mortgaged), father of 1 and soon to be married next year. The year after we wish to upgrade our home to a house.
I would also like to get an undergraduate degree but am not sure about the best way to go about it. If I were to go down a bricks and mortar uni then a student loan would be needed, if I went down the Open University route then a loan via OUSBA would be needed.
Will either of these effect any potential new mortgage or are they classed as 'Student loans' and therefore aren't actually debt at all?
Regards
Si0
