Sorry if this has been asked before but unfortunately I haven't got time to wade through 113 pages and I have looked through the last few :o

Anyway, we supported our son's Student Loan application which was completed on-line on 31 May this year. We've received a few standard emails saying thanks for the application etc but no request for any further information. Do they ask for supporting documents for all applications or only a selection?

Also, if everything goes well, when can our son expect his first payment? We've not had anything through the post, just a few emails. The latest came today saying "thanks for submitting your details on line" which seemed a bit strange seeing as we did it several weeks ago.

    Thanks :)

I have a query on mine if you can help

I have 2 loans one was taken Sept 2005
Then I had another taken Sept 2008 for my PGCE

I am now a full time mother and don't plan to go back into work til DD is off to school, and then I will work part time. So 4/5 years away.

My current loan stands at 25500k, 7k is from PGCE 2008. I am gaining £1000 interest a year so when I finally start work it will be 30K, working part time for awhile whilst my children are young I won't reach the threshold for years and when I finally do it the repayment won't even cover the interest so my loan will only ever increase year by year, so even when I do earn more it will never EVER be gone. I hate that!

Also because 1 of the loans is post 2005 will that part get wiped after 25 years? And how on earth will they work out how much to wipe off if I have made repayments on all of it?
Really wish I'd delayed uni by a year now.
HELP, it will be horrible, I think it will be 50k by the time I earn enough to start denting it-but then again the interest amount will be so high by then maybe I won't. Will I never have a paycheque without it on there.

You're worrying unnecessarily. However much you owe, repayments will never be more than a small percentage of your salary and what's left will be written off.

Think of it as a tax rather than a debt.

In the end I did photocopy everything off again and send it off to them. Its been gone a month and I was getting worried as we had no reply. But I got a phone call this morning. They have managed to get my husband and my son mixed up and thought that both of them were students

For official forms we have to go by the name on my husbands birth certificate and passport so my husband and son share the same 1st and last name but different middle names eg my husbands is A B C and son is A D E C. Everything else is different - DOB, national Insurance number, ucas personal ID numbers etc and I have made sure that in every form filled in all the details were correct and refered to the right person.

They said that the forms we recieved before came out so quick because they thought my husband was the student and as he is over 25 you get them straight away

So we are now waiting for new forms for my son to sign - assume this is new payment advice and payment schedule etc. These were sent out on the 18th so hopefully thye will be here this week.

    Fuming

Just looking at the Financial Evidence form I kep a copy of and it says "to fully assess the student you are supporting we need copies of your financial documents" and it has my husbands name, DOB and national insurance number at the top, everything correct.

We are supporting youngest sons claim.

Back at the start of April we had a letter about household income so we photocopied all of the evidence and completed the financial evidence confirmation form - 2011/12 and sent it off. Then in mid April we got the letter and everything seemed to be fine. He got his letter about payment advice, payment timetable and student finance breakfdown etc and he signed the form and off it went. That seemed to be it.

Then while we were away an identical letter arrived asking for household income details plus the same evidence form but this letter said they had not received a reply to the 1st letter. The deadline for this was May 16th while we were away.

Not sure what to do now, wether to ignore it, assuming its just a computer spewing out letters or wether to complete the evidence form and send all of the photocopies off yet again?

Personally I'd call them, tell them what you've said above, and ask them what is going on and what they want you to do - don't take any chances things are OK. The SLC are not one of the more competent financial institutions in existance (been hugely messed around by them myself, and I'm not the only one), unfortunately, so it's best to be certain. I'd also recommend requesting acknowledgement of your query and confirmation of their response (hopefully that all is OK!) in writing, if I were you, so they can't attempt to change their story at a later date (yes, experience again...).

If you do wind up sending it all again, you might also want to include copies of the 'confirmation' letter you received mid April to sign and return and the "you haven't replied" letter you just received, and request a response from their complaints department as to why they sent a confirmation pack if they thought you hadn't replied...

Hello! This is on behalf of my over half.

He finished his law degree 3 years ago. Didnt have to pay for any fees cause his parents didnt earn enough and got non-repayable grants too.
He wants to go and do a Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Sector. It's a 2 year part time course which he'll start in Oct 2012.
We were told that the fees system for this course will change in 2012.
At the moment, he earns £17,000 a year (before tax).
    Lives at home.
    He'll be 26 by oct 2012.
Dad is retired and mum doesn't work.

We're finding it really hard to find any sort of clarity on what sort of bursaries, grants, loans etc there is on offer for this course considering the fact that it is a teaching course. Taking into consideration that this will be post-16 teaching, not primary or secondary as the funding is different for that.

Also, tried the student loans calculator and it's told us to contact student loans company. Wondering if there was any other way to find out any information that is clear and consise and just explains yes you can get help and how much or no you cant.
    THANKS!

    Mortgage free date: Jul 2023.

I don't know if its any different for teacher training but as he has a degree he is not entitled to any more student finance (unless NHS course).

Normally teacher training is an exception, however the DTLLS courses are not designated for student finance.

I'm no expert, however if you only submitted your application online on 31 May, I doubt very much that it has been finalised.

I think you can still expect them to contact you for finance details etc however if you log into your account and click on 'view
correspondence' on lefthand side, this will show you if, as yet, they have sent you any further correspondence.

Don't worry at this stage if there isn't anything showing, it can take several weeks for them to initiate any paperwork.

You will only know that they have assessed your son's claim once he receives all the figures re loans/grants. This will also show exact dates of payment into his account. However, bear in mind, the first payment can take several days after the said date to go into his account, as its only once he's registered onto his course on his first week, do SF get notified. Don't panic, as we did first time round, its very common.

Failing all else, leave it a couple of weeks or so and ring SF, they may be able to give you a better idea of where your application is in the system. I do however know, from experience, that it can take 2 weeks for any financial evidence, once submitted, to actually reach the 'assessment team', or whatever they call themselves.

It took over 4 weeks in our case for the "team" to do the assement and even then they made a mess of it

You can put your information into the student finance calculator to see what loans/grants you will get.
    http://www.studentfinance.direct.gov.uk/portal/page?_pageid=153,4680136&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL

    You should get:
    £4950 (loan)
    £2906 (grant)
    £1508 (Parent Learning Allowance)

plus a grant from your university - if you look on their website you should find information about how much,

You may get a childcare grant of up to 85% of your childcare costs, upto £148.75 a week for one child.
    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearning/UniversityAndHigherEducation/StudentFinance/Extrahelp/DG_171503

You can continue to claim child tax credit.

You may also be able to claim IS, HB, and JSA during your summer holiday. Your maintanence loan will be counted as income but most of the other student finance you will receive won't be counted when assessing you for income based benefits.
    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/On_a_low_income/DG_070816

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/On_a_low_income/DG_10034876

You won't need to pay council tax as students are exempt.

You need to fill out the paperwork for student finance ASAP otherwise you may not receive your student finance before the start of your course (presuming you're starting Sept '11)
