My husband and I moved abroad 18 months ago. We both have 'new' student loans. I do not work, and my husband earns just enough to get us by.

The SLC have contacted him telling him he must start paying back the money; there is no way we can afford that.

What is the worst case scenrio? I KNOW they say they can take you to court, baliffs, etc, but has this actually ever happened to anyone who lives abroad?

    Thanks

    K

There are different repayment levels for different countries; have you checked whether your husband earns over the repayment threshold for the country you live in?

Hi, I hope someone can help.
My DS has applied for student finance. On Thursday I received a letter asking for further income evidence as the P60 I sent had a tax code of W1.
On Friday he received a letter saying he had been awarded tuition fees and maintenance loan but no mention of maintenance grant which he will definitely be entitled to due to my low income.
Presumably the two letters have crossed in the post, they are still waiting for my evidence but in the meantime have assessed him without it.
I have sent the evidence required today by recorded delivery.

    My questions are:
Will he automatically be reassessed for maintenance grant when they receive the evidence they requested or does he have to write to them requesting it?
Meantime, does he sign to accept this loan or just wait to hear from them again?

Hi I am new to all this as a parent. Can someone please help me as a disabled mum on low income. I have 2 daughters starting uni tis Sept. I sent off my financial details in June to appeals team having spent last six years on my own with daughters until l recently when met my first new partner..He does not get on with my daughters or believe in Uni education thus refuses to declare his income. Hence he does not support them fianancally. As this is my property he pays a small amount in rent which still leaves me well under 25k thresshold. Appeal was overturned as they want his income. He is self employed and buisness is not doing well this year due to recession, however his accountant will not have his accounts ready till Dec. This is causing causing so much tension between my girls & him that we are talking about splitting up. An advisor at SFE said l only needed to produce my decree absolute as proof of being single ..is this true? Can some one please help

    Hi

Is there any financial help available for "mature" students doing an access to HE course?

My OH is 30 and has a place on an Access to Science course at sheffield college, however the fees are £1365 and he doesn't have the money.

He previously made himself bankrupt about 2 years ago so a small bank loan is out of the question, any ideas?

    Thanks Em

According to the notes for the application, for dependent students their parent and their parent's partner count for the purpose of income assessment.
your parent’s partner is defined as:
    • Your stepmother or stepfather.
    • Your parent's opposite or same sex partner if they live together as though they were married or in a civil partnership.

Therefore as your partner lives with you, I think their income needs to be taken into consideration for your daughter to get income assessed support.

If this is his first level 3 course then he would be eligible for £30 per week ALG which most people in his situation use towards the fees. What is he planning to study at university?

He's hoping to study Physics (god knows why! lol)

How would he go about applying for that? and would he definately be eligable?

Tbh dont know if it'd be enough, as obviously he has to pay for the course up front. So frustrating, as he was told by a staff memeber at the college that as it would be his first level 3 he wouldnt have to pay anything, only later to be told that actually there might be an age restriction on that.

    Thanks Em x

SFE's decision is correct, and you have no grounds for appeal.

It should also be his income for the 08/09 tax year that needs to be declared. His accounts for that should've been filed before the 31st January 2010, so he should have these or he'll be racking up fines from HMRC.

You have to be under 25 to get the course free, I'm afraid. Most colleges will allow you to pay fees in some kind of installments if you ask.

    Hi.

I'm hoping someone can help me here.

I need to send evidence to Student Finance England for my loan app.

I've done the PFF1/2 form for my mother telling them how much she earned in 08-09. The only boxes she ticked in this form were yes to getting Child Tax Credit and Income Support. She had no other income so every other box was 0. The form said that if they were the only boxes ticked, she just had to write her NI number down and didn't need to send evidence.

Now when they received my form they updated my account to show what I was getting. 3 months later now, they've taken that off and now say I can only get the minimum loan and no grant. They say they want financial evidence.

I phoned up and asked what I could send. The said P60, P11D, P7D or a statement of earnings.

I said she had none of those as she hadn't worked in that tax year so he said contact DWP for a statement of earnings.

Yet there is no contact number for DWP that covers this. Their numbers are for pension queries etc.

Is my mother meant to have a statement of earnings? If she is, how does she go about getting one? If not, does anyone know what she can send?

    Thanks.
