I make quilts from old garments. My first were log cabins in shades of blues and lilac. Blue fabricris are plentiful!
I had a scrap bag with lots of little peices left over from my dressmaking days. The patchworks hang on the walls in my bedroom and are full of memories of the many clothes that they represent. Looking at them, I see a new element every day!
My only regret with these is using a few fabrics that are not pure cotton (just because they were pretty) They have frayed slightly and would not wash well.
I only use pure cotton now!
Some of the fabrics that I added came from sample books of soft furnishing fabrics. Small firms who make up soft furnishing items are usually glad to pass them on, when the range changes.
Small cotton curtain scraps are usually just thrown away, so ask! Some places will keep their scrap bag for you, and you can take it, keep what is useful, and recycle the remainder as rags! (Charity shops get money for rags).
If you do ask people to keep them for you, please remember to pick them up when you say you will, otherwise people will become reluctant to do it in future!0 -
Pic of the finished item.
I know I said I was starting on a blue one, and DO have the material ready and waiting.
Only problem is the class I am in has no teacher or equipment!!!
Its taken me this long to get this done, once I started it only took a few hours.
The people in class that are 'Helping' me are really holding me back and are very negative of anything I hope/try to do.
Were it up to them I wouldn't have got this little one underway let alone finished!
I couldn't wait till next week to be told how to do it, so have finished it off with common sense.
Whatever I'd shown them at my class they would have said it wasn't right.
I'm very happy that I have produced something that resembles a patchwork quilt, am going to make a start on next one Wednesday.
I am off to US at the start of June and hope to buy my own equipment and some material while I am there.

Hi there! Have you just used the location from your computer, or is it "hosted" on a site such as Flickr or Photobucket?
I'll find you the thread explaining how to import a pic

I am also toying with the idea of making a quilt for DS's cot, as I have an old one made for his dad, that was spoilt by felt pen (by a previous generation, I must add!) The design part is what I'm finding daunting at the moment, so I keep putting it off...
I have covered spoilt patches on quilts by sewing another patch on top. Probably not very professional but it will save a treasured quilt without taking it all apart and putting it back together again.0 -

LilacLillie, your quilt is perfect, really beautiful. You have a very good eye for colour
I can't imagine that your class could find fault with it, you should show it off with pride :T
You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
I hope you can assist me with a problem, please
My daughter would like me to make her a quilt. She has asked for it to be wider than her single duvet, so that she can tuck it around her. I'm not convinced
Would you suggest that she have the quilt about the same size as her duvet, or will it look OK being wider?
And if I make it wider, the widest wadding I can find is 137cm (154"). What do I do about the wadding in this case?
Thank youElementary my dear Watson......and Jess, Jane, Hercule and Endeavour!!0 -
You can jooin 2 pieces together using the zig zag stitch on the machine, open the stitch to its widest and butt the two pieces together under the foot with the centre of the foot running down the middle of the two pieces and making sure the needle goes in both sides zig zag it. If you look on line you can get king size batting which should be plenty big enough for what you want, even a quees size will tuck in on the sides. It will look fine hanging down the sides, its no problem, you just make a quilt to suit you.......measure down one side across the top and down the other side of the matress and add 9 - 12 inches to each side depending on how far she wants it to tuck under. measure the bed from the top of the mattress to the bottom and down again add 9 - 12 inches to tuck in a the bottom and if she wants it to go over the pillows allow enough for that.
My quilt I fold down at the top and tuck about 4inches of the fold under the pillows and the fold it back over the top of the pillows, it makes it neater than just pulling it up.Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0
