If the developers havent supplied an aerial - what would be my options?

    thanks

    Hi!

I am an ex ITV Digital/Freeview employee..
So hopefully I can offer some advice..!

Depending on your signal strength you may get away with an indoor set top aerial.. You will probably need a booster though (they are £14.99 in Wilkinson).

As you have a really bad analog picture it either means, you have an aerial thats badly aligned (or just completely useless) or you you just have very good signal strength and a set top aerial will work fine.

As suggested above, check with your neighbours, see if you can establish if you have got a communal aerial..

If you find you have and their pictures are fine, check that all your aerial lead connections are tight, as they may have come loose in the move.

Let us kno what happens and I may be able to offer some more help.

  • Thanks Bex,

will post back tomorrow with an update.

  • I went and checked with the neighbour - could only get hold of one and she said her TV was fine - though i'm not sure she understood what i was saying (her english wasnt very good)

I have indoor set top aerial which i took out and put on - the analogue channels came up but no freeview - i have used the aerial with the TV for freeview in the past and it had worked fine.

I think i need to find some more of my neighbours.

You're in a different location-the indoor aerial may have worked before but not in your new location. Can you not see an aerial on the roof, or ask your management company? Decent Freeview reception usually requires a roof aerial or at least a booster.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Are you in a completely different area? As in you will be coming off a different transmitter? or mid way between two? try pointing the aerial in the other direction?
If you look here you will be able to work out where your nearest transmitters: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/tv/ifi/tech/transmaps/
Also here http://www.ukfree.tv/mapsofsignal.php (if you can find a nearby postcode it accepts)

Try retuning the box if you haven't already?

I think you need to find more neighbours to find out if you have got a communal aerial.. definitly first port of call.

You may be one of the unlucky ones who just cant get freeview.. but unless you live in a very rural area, or behind a big hill I doubt it.

  • You need to retune the digital tv as the signal may be from another transmitter.

  • Thanks guys - will check all those suggestions this evening.

I checked the Ukfree website and this is what came up -

"Freeview reception may depend on the suitability of your aerial.
It is likely that the TV aerial on the house points 19km southwest toward the transmitter at Crystal Palace, if so you should be able to plug-and-go with a Freeview box using your existing (group A positioned horizontally) roof-top TV aerial.

It could also point 40km southeast toward the transmitter at Bluebell Hill, if so you should be able receive Freeview but you may need a new (group W (or wideband) positioned horizontally) roof-top TV aerial.

The aerial could also point 8km south toward the transmitter at Woolwich, which you probably cannot receive a reliable Freeview service from (but you can watch analogue channels).

The aerial could also point 40km south-southwest toward the transmitter at Reigate, which you probably cannot receive a reliable Freeview service from (but you can watch analogue channels).

Note: these predictions are based upon a rooftop aerial mounted 10 meters above ground level. They are based on a central point in the postcode area. Local terrain and increased aerial height may make more (or less) services available."
