Hi all
I'm not sure how to go about my situation, I had 2 water meters fitted a year ago, when the guy came to fit it he had to put two water meters in because of the way the pipes are set up, since then I have only been charged for the cold water and not the hot water!
Should I contact the water company and explain this to them and then end up having to pay a years worth of water in one go? Or keep quiet as they may not have logged the 2nd water meter into there records, The water bills I get only have the water meter number for the cold water on the bill and not the hot water?
Please advise

Not understood, you pay for water from the mains and you can't get mains hot water - unless you live in Iceland!0

I had two water meters fitted in my flat a year ago, they only charge me for one water meter which is the one that the cold water runs through, they havnt charged me for the other water meter which the hot water runs through from the boiler - for the shower and washing machine0

Slightly confused here.
The water company are only supplying the cold water. It goes into your flat from the mains and then it goes from there to the tank and boiler. The mains do not fill up the tank or boiler with another supply.
Unless this is some kind of new build flat..lol
I have no idea why you would have another meter there as normally second meters are for "another " supply IE outside toilet or tap.
There would be no standing charges on that meter and it would be billed on consumption only.
Rule of thumb..One supply in and meter on that supply. If there is 2 supplies in then there will be 2 meters but I have never heard of a "hot water meter"
The only thing I can think of although highly unlikely is that it is a check meter and it works by recording the flow from that pipe (to check for leaks or it supplied something else at the time of fitting or it was maybe due to supply something more but they never got round to it )but the supply is still the same so being billed from the main meter.
As I say that is highly unlikely, Did the water company fit the meter themselves ? Which company are you with ?There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;

I am with Thames water,
The 1st water meter is under the sink, this is the one that I am getting charged for, the second water meter is next to the boiler which the water for the shower and washing maching go through, this water meter records the water which I have not been billed for as yet, I have only been billed for the water meter under the sink which only measures the water that I use from the sink!
I called them last nite to explain this situation and that I have two water meters one under the sink which measures the water which I use in the sink and the other which is near the boiler - this one measures the water that I use for the shower and washing machine and I have not been billed for this water yet!
They told me to ignore the 2nd water meter and only give them readings from the water meter under the sink, so even though the water meters measure the water seperatly;
Water meter one - Under sink and measures water I use in sink.
Water meter two - near boiler and measures the water I use for shower and washing machine.
The water meters are seperate as I have tested them and the dials only spin for the water meter under the sink when I use that one. The dials for the second one near the boiler spins when I use the washing machine or the shower.
They are seperate water meters0 -
How old is your property ?
Is it an old terrace house with downstairs bathroom by any chance ? , and do the serial numbers look similar on both meters ?
If you could explain the layout and age of the peoperty it will help0 -
I should think that your tank is filled from the main supply (meter under the sink) and the meter from the tank measures that.
So when you run the hot for a shower only that meter would record as the tank is already full and the water to fill it would record on your main meter when your heating / hot water comes on.
The mains is not going to fill your tank, it would go through a boiler / heating system first I should think.
You didn't say if the water company fitted the meters because if they did then they will know which is supplying you and which should be charged on.There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;

The pipes to the sink are seperate to the pipes that go to the shower and washing machine, it is not a case of hot and cold water it is the way the pipes are set up and come in to my flat. So the water pipe is seperate for the sink and seperate for the shower and washing machine0

we had to have two meters. it's a real mess, physically and logistically... we get a standing charge on only one meter, but then separate bills for the supply and sewerage (90% of the supply) for each meter. It's only a matter of time before there's a "computer error" at the water company billing office, and we end up with two bills with double standing charges imposed.
We were told the reason we needed two meters is because the water company couldn't merge two mains supplies nor could it cap one main. To so apparently leaves a 'dead leg' where stagnant water collects between the premises and the water main in the street. And that can apparently pose a health hazard.
In other words, the water company is too mean to dig up the street and do the job properly (fat chance of that any way). So instead they disrupt our houses with unnecessary work and clutter, the wasted cost from fitting an unnecessary meter, and years of inconvenience in billing for two supplies to a single residential premises.
We did complain about 5 years ago to OFWAT without any success. Suffice to say the regulator is staffed by a load of wet drips and slimy industry stooges.0 -
You property has 2 supplies hence 2 meters, why should the water company pay to have it sorted and pass the cost onto all its customers , why not do it yourself if its that much of a problem ?0

nope.. one of the supplies was originally shared with a neighbouring premises which was at one time owned by the same people.
so for unexplained reasons, you expect me to dig up the street, trace the pipework back to the water company's main and do the water company's own work by capping the supply from there?!
i will tell you a story of water company greed that will make your eyes water..
a hotel nearby was recently re-fitted in a three million pound makeover.. new toilets, kitchen, ensuite guest bedrooms, etc..
part of that work involved bringing in a new water main... all the work up to the boundary of the hotel was carried out by the owner. the last job was for the water company to finally bridge the pipework from their own main to the hotel's supply - a distance of less than one metre in a ready-dug trench, correctly lined with shingle, etc.
And the water company's charge for carrying out that pathetic 15 minute job? £26,000
and worse still, the hotel owner was obliged to backfill the hole and make good the road surface..
while i am at it, i might as well name the water company... severn trent... who were caught recently defrauding millions of their customers by deliberately overcharging them and had been stealing from them for years.
it was a vast theft that ran into tens of millions of pounds.. And what was OFWAT's answer - they are the regulator, safeguarding consumer interests, yes? Did they call in the cops? the SFO? Nope.. they told Severn Trent to give the customers a 50p refund... which Severn Trent marketed on the bills as a "Thank You!"
Thieves...
