Is powergen your usual bill  or is this backpayments on top?
If getting 0% deals i out of the question theres a thing called the credit card shuffle you can try also..shuffle the higher apr debts onto the cards with lower aprs..
Can you get the kids to take packed lunches?

Thanks for responding - hoped you would!! you really cheered me up last night so a big thanks. Ok, the kids were on lunches and hardly ever ate them - fussy!! changed them to school dinners and their dad was going to pay half but in about 12 months has only chipped in once !! Would tackle him but hes a waste of space so may have to put them back on packed lunches!!

Also , with powergen i never receieved a printed bill just paid £30 as they requested per month from bank account, then was advised owed over £500 - they said it was my fault as i had an online account??? and wouldnt receive paper bills, the only option they offered was to pay off usual payment - they worked out about £48 per month with the rest (£72) to pay off the arrears!!! feel a bit duped by this as i really didnt know about it until got the letter from them!!

You could get free sat through your current set up - go the the sky web site and search for freesat. Will cost an initial £20 for the card then no more costs

I know someone has already asked, but it would be really help to see the wood from the trees if you could type out a full statement of affairs. You need to break everything down, how much you spend on groceries, travel, clothes, etc. Have a look here , although you don't need to have sub categories, if you list everything we can start picking over it!!

P.S. Riff Raff, hope you don't mind me linking to your soa, I was very impressed with all the detail!

Afraid you need to cut out the luxuries - smoking (even rollies would drastically cut the expense, clothes, going out, haircuts once a month? do you have any clippers if they are boys? Kid lunches - give the packed lunches. oh and of course sky has to go. This should save you aprox £340pm. Obviously add some of the money from the school lunches to to you shopping bill to compesate for making them.

do you have an equity in the house? could you expand that option?

it's going to be very tough time for the immediate future but it will be worth it in the end

hI I DONT SMOKE (OH does) i have put the amx down for his smoking but i dont think he buys 1 pack per day - im overbudgeting to be safe - he has tried to give up and with my persuasion will be trying again v.soon!

I put clothes down, going out etc as again an oversompensation - we rarely go out - prob once every 2 - 3 months, and dont really spend much on clothes for ourselves however sometimes the boys need stuff - buy cheap tho.. luckily theyre not chavs"!! ;-)

theres prob about £40k + equity in the house - however weve been late with our mortgage payments a few times and with our unpredictable income from being S/E im not sure we would get a remortgage??

Could be even cheaper - just phone up & cancel sky - you should already have a viewing card which will last for a wee bit yet which will allow you to see the "free" cahnnels. THat's what I did a year ago & no need to get a free view box.

No need to spend £20 just yet - that can be used for a repayment somewhere.
