I know you said you didn't want to watch TV but what about semi educational programmes like wildlife programmes? My 8 year old loves this kind of thing, we are working our way through a 12 disc DVD at the moment and she never gets bored with it. She said to me last night that she wants to travel the world and see all the animals that we don't get to see in the UK. Best get her to start saving up her pennies if she wants to do this

We also made a CD of our favourite girly songs which we play and dance around the living room to - she loves this and gets the giggles at mummy being a sillybilly!
I've only just started cooking and baking from scratch so I get my daughter to write out the recipes as we go along and then she writes a description of what we did and how it tasted. I've even got her to start an online blog of all the recipes we have tried and are going to try. She never gets bored, even if she doesn't like the end result! We’ve had to remove your signature. Yeah I know the feeling - the trick is not to play too soon before bed or you'll lie in a doze continuing the game of Tetris in your headamosworks wrote:Tetris on the computer is always a big time killer for me but not very productive I'm afraid (until people wonder how you managed to stack your freezer so efficiently)

WOAS - you don't say how old your DD is. If over 4 - are you musical? Do you have a piano or guitar you could teach her some tunes/simple chords on? Are there songs you can remember from your childhood that you've not yet taught her?

me too! I keep all the plastic boxes from veg etc as I find them great to grow things like salad in. Maybe something like quilting, its quite fun preparing all the bits and sewing them together, and if you do big ones and make cushion covers instead, they come together quickly so the results can be seen fast. Im using my old work uniform for my current quilt too, its quite fun!
My apologies for the (slightly) off topic post!

Pom poms.
You need two doughnut shaped pieces of card (ie, circle with a hole in the middle)
keep threading wool aroound the circle through the hole until you can't thread any more through.
Then, carefully cut the wool around the edges, and gradually separate the circles a short amount. Then tie extra wool around the middle between the two bits of card, which should form the pom pom shape. Fluff it out.
hope that helps.
Have fun :j

My DD (8) and I play chess - she loves it! We also play battleships (the old fashioned kind on squared paper where you mark it out yourself), and she also loves a game I played as a child called "boy, girl, flower, fruit" You get a sheet of paper each and mark out 8 columns. At the top of each column you write boys name, girls name, flower, fruit, animal, country, river and total (you can use whatever category you want - we sometimes do film star, pop star, song, TV programme, book character etc) and then you get a page of the newspaper or a book and stick a pin in to get the letter you are going to use, say, P. Then you have to go across writing in all the things beginning with the leter P. The first one to finish stops the game and then you score. If you have a valid answer and no-one else has an answer you get 20 points for that category. If you each have answers and they are different you get 10 points and if you both have the same you get 5. Then you put your total in the end column. We usually play about 8 rounds before it gets boring but it is great fun trying to think of the most unusual names and so on - we love it, and so do all DD's friends when they come round - even the most hardened TV and computer freaks!!Jane

Yes, this is how we do it too, we make different size ones and turn them into animals by drawing eyes, ears etc on card, cutting it out and sticking them on!!!! Sometimes i do buy those wobbly eyes, Wilkinsons sell packs of them really cheaply.0 -
how about learning a new skill together?
star-gazing? origami? scrapbooking? researching your family tree?
