Probably cam/timing belt. If it was highish mileage I'd almost guarantee it.

Belts such as the one for your generator ans water pump are normally smooth. They're the ones you can see at the front of your engine (just for those who've never looked :))

Toothed belts are normally used for timing type things where the teeth keep hold and they can't slip like a smooth one can, which would certainly mess up your engine.

Most commonly, as above - it's the cam belt. This should definitely be replaced at whatever regular intervals the manufacturer suggests. If it fails while in use it's an instant wrecked engine.

    To the OP

You start loads of threads (which isnt a bad thing as knowledge is good) but why dont you go back to them with outcomes?

ie what happened in your supaguard case

I don't start loads of threads normally, it's just that there have been a lot of unrelated questions I have needed to ask concerning my rather unhappy experience of buying a new motor and I don't know of any other way to get them aired and answered FYI.
Strangely enough problems often can present themselves in a mult-fascetted fashion, I have no control over inevitability now do I?

The reason I hadn't got back onto the previous supagard thread was because I have a life and a lot of distractions (kids and friends needing taxi-ing about and generally taken care of amongst other things) and if you can manage to wind your neck in for a few minutes and go read that thread you will see that as soon as I've had a suitably long enough interval, without interruption to do so, I HAVE got around to updating?!!........Why so bl000dy touchy for goodness sake?!

Go off and apply to be a moderator or something useful if you' re so keen to keep such close tabs on other people's posts?!!!!!:p.....and by the way there are nicer ways to ask for things!

Yeah, thought it might be. :D
I've heard people refer to the cam belt as the timing belt before but not Toothed belt  Strange!......No use going to ask dealer bought from, as discovered too late, can't rely on anthing he feeds me?!

The totally weird thing is that the service history that was with the car (in the wallet with the drivers and audio manuals) when I took it for a test drive was not the same record that is inside the wallet now .........:confused: ........ But I have no proof of this do I?
Also this service history could be for any car ??? As there is no identification within the whole service record booklet such as registration mark to tie it into the cars true history?!! Should have checked absolutely everything before accepted the car and drove it away................But you don't expect this though do ya?:o God help me I'll never buy a car on the fly again no matter how stranded I am!! I'll taxi it at an horrendous cost for as long as is needed so as not to get done again?!!

which car did you go with in the end?

FWIW, my service manual is showing a toothed belt - so yes, cambelt by another name. Mine hasn't been done but will be in the next fortnight.

I could wait until the car next wants a service, but according to my laptop which I plugged into it yesterday, I have another 15000 miles to wait!!! Not flipping likely. It's at 55000 now.
