aliasojo wrote:Lol QofH....not sure why you got stuck as you seem to have it exactly right.
Cheers
It is when the friend insisted on getting a piggy bank when I gave her your idea thet i got stuck, coz I have not seen any.
Better that I suggest she look into the thread and MSE forums for herself.
Neat idea but how much do you reckon a few odd pennies and pound coins would amount to?
I collect all coins I come across at home for the use of car parking facilities, the need for the coins seem plenty for me
cheers again anyways'She that was ever fair and never proud

Ah.....I get it now. I was wondering about the 'stuck' bit, lol.
Honestly, you would be surprised how much the 'bits' add up to. I used to be of the mindset where I would think....'well it's only x, that's not going to help', but once I got past that way of thinking......'x' along with all the other x's soon mounted up.
Of course if you are the type of person who is very careful about what they spend, then this may not help you, but many of us just seem to go through money like water sometimes and this helps you to focus on areas where you either don't need to spend or are spending and wasting money on stuff you just don't need and could easily do without.
One of my wastes was buying bottles of coke from the corner shop (almost daily) at £1.49 a go. It was a habit and I didn't even think about it tbh. I didn't need them and could easily do without, so a few quid a week went into Herman instead of the corner shop thereafter.
No-one is suggesting you deprive yourself totally of the things that you like, but exercising a bit of caution and focusing at what you really wanted to do (ie paying off the mortgage or whatever) just makes you think twice before spending. Unless you are extremely disciplined already, a bit of help to remember your goals just helps you to remember your priorities.
As I said in an earlier post somewhere, the least I have collected in Herman was a tenner and the most was around £150. Do that often enough and over a period of time it all adds up.Herman - MP for all!0 -
Well done aliasojo! Herman will be most pleased!0

Yip! Didn't you mention something about a smug git smilie at one point? :rotfl: Think Herman would quite like a smug g*t badge, lol.
I just called my mortgage company today to get an updated accurate figure of what's left and I'm soooooo tempted to clear us out to pay it. I'm absolutely obsessed now. We've just had this months wage in 4 days ago and although we've been skint before.....I don't think we'll ever have been skint quite as quickly, if I do it.
It REALLY would mean beans on toast (or maybe just beans :undecided ) until the end of the month though. Sitting here wondering how I can sell this idea to OH.
Needless to say the POTM prize is going towards it too. So thanks again to everyone who voted and joined in......you've indirectly helped me with my mortgage.
Just for the record, Herman wont be made redundant once the mortgage goes......he'll just need to change his wee speech bubble and then start campaigning to get the credit card(s) paid off next, lol. No rest for the wicked.Herman - MP for all!0 -

An update from George the Get-Rich Gorilla, from the first few pages of this thread.
After two weeks of sitting on my desk at work encouraging me not to buy newspapers, coffees, cokes, sandwiches, beers, sweets etc. he's saved me £90. £90 in a fortnight is amazing, but I shudder to think of the money I've been wasting for the last 3 years I've worked here!
For the sake of security he's now just overseeing the process and reminding me of his presence, and I'm feeding him 'virtually' by entering the money on a spreadsheet, with a view to making monthly additions to an online savings account. At this rate, this time next year the account will contain £4,500! That would be three years off my debts.
Thank you George, thank you Herman, thank you Aliasojo, thank you everyone.

My son refuses to give up our spare piggy bank, cos his sister smashed his new one from Santa, so until he gets a new one, he's keeping the spare.
Nursery fees reduce from next month :money: cos DD is 3, so I'm going to look at our budget and see about putting the saved money towards our mortgage.0 -
aliasojo - hope that you are well and Herman isn't too hungry, even though its the beginning of the month
a really really great idea - while the mortage is not the most pressing financial committment for me at the moment, you have helped sparked a couple of ideas in how i could tweak this idea for my personal circumstances. Currently trying to decide between a phone piggy - for everytime i use the telephone - or a shoe fund piggy.
thanks again xr.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0
