  • A £62 April overpayment from mortgage pig and frog plus odds and sods transferred over thanks to online banking (whatever did I do before online banking I ask you?!). Lots of odd bits of change have gone back into mortgage pig and frog to be carried over to May so let the pain free mortgage overpayments continue :)

Piggies being ignored cos we're all doing the 3 yr challenge??????

Remember it was the pigs that started us off, ignore them at your peril  .

Anyway, my little peefer helped me with £50 towards my payment of over £600 this month :T :T :T :T

    :) Mortgage Balance = £0 :)

I've got a Mortgage Monkey! Well, that's what I think it is. It looks vaguely gorilla like but none of us knows what it really is. My eldest brought it back for me from a school trip. It's a piggybank for all the loose change I leave "lying around" She bought it cos it reminded her of me. Charming! :rotfl:

Anywho, it's filling up nicely and will either be dumped onto the mortgage or more likely be used to buy treats for the kids (which I suspect is the reason my eldest bought it for me - DD didn't raise no fools! :) ).

I've done some quick sums in preparation for getting the Gorilla working. I'm amazed by what I've calculated. For the purposes of my statement it's written in the first person by the Gorilla but I'll quote directly...

    • "Say there are 20 working days in a month. 5 of those you buy a coffee which costs £2; 8 of them you buy a sandwich meal for £3.50; 5 of them you buy crisps, coke or chocolate at £1. That month you’ve spent £43, quite unnecessarily. I would look after if for you, and you could have £516 at the end of the year."

    • "Buy the paper once a week not 5 times a week , and read it on the web instead, and save 3 lots of 70p. That’s about £10 a month. That’s £120 a year!"

    • "Someone going to the pub and spending £2.94 per pint on 2 beers most days – say 4 of 5 – is spending £23.52 a week, £94 a month; £1223.04 a year. Put it in me instead, and watch your savings grow."

    • "Do all three of the things above and save £1859 a year"

Just goes to show how money can be frittered away. And also that perhaps I shouldn't leave it hanging around at work of an evening....

After reading this thread I am going to reuse my old elephant (piggy) bank that I have locked away in a bedding box for 20 years, and he will now help me cut my mortgage at the same time as cutting my waist measurement as I am going to feed him all my chocoholic spends. This should save approximately £2 per day= £14 per week= £728 per year. I am going to give him a speech bubble and a prominent place to remind me daily.

  • Hi,

This is a great thread! I've started my mortgage pig with £12 that I was going to spend on a KFC last night and then thought back to this thread and stopped myself.

I shall also be feeding piggy the chocolate money... it's bleedin' scary how it all adds up!!!

Thanks OP for the simple but fab idea x

    welcome angel :)

Well yesterday I re did the piggies speech bubble and placed them in a more prominent position. OH and I are attempting to clear the mortgage in five years:eek: Mortgage is £135K . (I am also clearing my debts for the next 24 mths) Last night we looked at ways to reduce our household bills even more to cut out any overspends. We are also getting married this year which is another cost.
With work bonuses and salaries it is a hard task but doable (sp) The freedom that this will bring will be brilliant.:T
