I find it really interesting (but baffling!) that carbon monoxide gets so much publicity, when each year there are on average 40 deaths linked to it.

Over 2000 people die every year from lung cancer linked to radon exposure, yet it's never in the news, and subsequently people don't bother testing their homes for it. Radon tests can be got for under £25, which would then tell you whether you need to take action to lower the level in your property (which is also relatively inexpensive).

I tend to agree with your first paragraph and much of it has to do with mis-information and sensationalism.

I dont live in a radon area (wish i did) so cant comment on that.

Gives you a rough idea of if you are in a likely area, and you can buy a postcode based risk assessment for about £3.50 - don't know enough about it to say whether it is worth it or free elsewhere though...

Thanks to OP also, will be calling into my local Tesco tomorrow!

LLoyds pharmacy have an offer on at the minute whereby you can get two health items for £20 - the list includes carbon monoxide detectors, set of scales, nurofen ear digital thermometer, blood pressure monitor, and a couple of other things I can't recall. Not as good as £5 each, but 2 for a tenner is not bad. HTH.

Just to let you know these are still out there !!!

    198667.jpg

Tried 2 stores and success in both.
Got 1 in the first and 3 in the second.

Neither stores had SELs for this particular CO alarm.

They are (were) on the shelves with 3 other models of FireAngel CO alarms (at various prices £10ish, £13ish & £17ish I seem to remember - I THINK they are ALL on a HALF-PRICE offer at the minute), and with the normal Smoke alarms

They are they last 3 on this Tesco direct page >> http://direct.tesco.com/q/N.1999822.aspx

You will probably find them wherever the LIGHT BULBS are located.

    Your looking for the CO-808 model - it's in a "plastic" (part see-through) box (about 6" x 6" x 2")
The non-transparent parts are mostly ORANGE and the remainder is GREEN.

They have a blue sticker on the front (small picture of "holiday" hotel, sunbeds, swimming pool) and the words PORTABLE CO ALARM - IDEAL FOR HOME & HOLIDAY

The box closely resembles the most expensive CO alarm that is the DIGITAL one - MODEL CO-828 - and you can clearly see a small LCD panel.

I mention this because the other CO alarms, the CO-9B and the CO-9X, are in a similar box but smaller, perhaps only 5" x 5" and the colour BLUE is quite obvious.

IF you think you've found the correct one CHECK the BARCODE.

    You are looking for 0 816317 000332 - this scans at £4.89
This barcode is actually part of the artwork on the back of the plastic box.
However I've found 2 of the correct CO-808 alarms with a different barcode label stuck over the top of the original.
    This barcode, 0 816317 000974 , actually scans at £19.55

However I still got them for the £4.89
Since I'd got one that actually scanned at £4.89, I just pointed out the products were identical and that they were on clearance at 75% discount, and obviously the "alternate" barcode had not been updated on the computer.

If you find one you can try this approach :)

Managed to get it last night, took a little while. I must have looked strange to other customers, checking the barcode against the numbers I had, but got it, so my gain.:j

These may be quite ancient as Standard it claims it conforms with is dated 1996:mad:
Has anyone found that batteries were flat:confused:

Has anyone found that batteries were flat:confused:

Why  would the batteries be flat JUST because the unit is built to a standard that was ratified in 1996 ?
Doesn't mean it was manufactured, packaged and has been sitting on a shelf since then.

I've got an In-Car FM transmitter that was only invented about 4 years ago but it conforms to a standard created in 1973.

Anyway, why do you think it conforms to a standard dated 1996 ???:confused:

This £4.89 CO alarm (the CO-808) is made to a British Standard from 2001

As for how old they are ....

.. I've just open 2 of mine, both manufatured last year (2008), one on 12th Jul and the other on 22nd Sept.

The 9 volt "GP Super Alkaline" PP3 that is in each packet (not fitted) both have "shelf-life" dates of July 2013
