Broadband Speeds in N. Ireland

It will also depend on how far you are from the exchange. My ISP contract is for a connection which is up to 8mb, but my actual connection is for 1mb, because even a 2mb connection is extremely unstable, thanks to us being well away from the exchange.0

BT36
says i am 997m from the exchange0 -
I don't understand the logic here. If you're all on the same package, your broadband speed is defined by (amongst other less important things) how close your line is routed through to the exchange.
But you're not. It's apples and oranges.
What difference does it make what town you're in?0 -
Up until about 10 months ago I was with those Virgin crooks. Speed was never ever above 0.5mbps, usually just under 0.4. They kept claiming it was the max limit for my line and blamed BT. Got my MP to write to them and the reply was just something to behold; they said to read the small print which stated that up to 8mbps legally meant they could supply anything from 0.1mbps up to 8mbps so therefore 0.4mbps was well within the legal limits. I changed instantly to BT. Speed has never fallen below 7mbps and is normally the full 8mbps, and they are significantly cheaper than Virgin and everybody else. My exchange is Millisle.0

The reason I asked for the town is simply to give an indication of the speed in that area with that particular ISP.
For example Talktalk have been bombarding me with offers recently after I made an enquiry but I knew a few talktalk customers in my area and none could get speeds above 0.8.
So if anyone is getting speeds of 4 meg and upwards and are based in the Carrickfergus area then I would consider changing to that ISP.
So the town you are based in makes a difference if you are going to use the information to make a decision as to what ISP offers a good service relative to that area.I used to be indecisive, but now I am not quite sure...........:undecided0 -

I'm in Carrick, at present with BT and getting around 6 kbps on average. I'm just over 1 km from the exchange. We were thinking of changing to Sky - to have the television as well. Don't want to lose out on the pretty decent speed at the minute though.0 -
