Benefits for Stay-at-home-Mother

I'm a married mother of a 15 month old boy and am 27 weeks pregnant with my second child. I have worked all my adult life and claim child benefit of £20 p/w for my first child. Am I entitled to any council tax discounts as my husband is now the only earner? Am I entitled to any financial assistance as I have chosen not to work and to stay at home to bring up my children? I resigned from my teaching post to have a family (didn't claim maternity pay etc) and wondered if I can claim support for not working?

im not 100% sure of any other benefits - tax credits? child and working tax credit??
just wondering....why did u not claim your maternity?? are you getting maternity allowance from the government??
are you on income support? you may be able to claim the surestart maternity grant of £500 if you are!?

i knew i wanted a career-break to raise a family so it seemed wrong to take maternity leave, take 6 months paid leave, then resign. as a teacher it was better for the school to fill a full-time position than maternity-leave post only to find that I left anyway.
I'm not looking for work now as I only have 13 weeks until my baby is born so I don't think income support is applic. as for maternity allowance, does this government pay you to stay at home? or only with childcare if you choose to work?

you can take maternity leave, even if you dont return to work. So you would still have been entitled to SMP/MA. Did your employers not point this out to you? Thats roughly £4k that you have lost moneywise, that you were entitled to!

Your income will be assessed as a couple. How much does your husband earn?
    Gone ... or have I?

No I didn't realise I could still claim SMP/MA. That's a shame. I guess it won't count for the second baby now I've been at home for 18 months?

Erin, have you been on "entitledto" website? you can type in what your details and it gives you an idea of the kind of benefits you may be able to get.
Phone up benefits people and see if you could still be entitled to any maternity pay for this child - just do a google search to get contact info. You should be able to get child tax credit or working tax credit if your hubby is earning less than a certain amount.

good luck with the baby and the money!

Your entitlement to benefits will be based on total household income, you won't qualify for things on your own (other than the SMP which you should have got). You will get more Child Benefit once second child born, more tax credits.
There is also the health in pregnancy grant (not means tested) and Sure Start (means tested).
If your husband is earning a reasonable wage then I am not sure there will be much more- the way it stands at the moment there is no benefit for being a SAHM. This said you can never replace the time you have with LO's so its about more than money.
Google the above grants and also try entitledto.com (or is it .co.uk, cannot remember!) or visit your local CAB.
    Best of luck.

You won't get any discount on council tax either unless you qualify for benefits in your own right, which you don't. Or if you are a full-time student.
