I wouldn't think a single can of tomatoes (if you're talking abotu the 400g normal size) would feed 4 people in a pasta sauce, same for the can of beans, which works out at a spoonful of beans each. You could bulk out the pasta sauce cheaply and nutritionally using lentils though.

Definitely check out Weezl's website though.

well even with 2 tins it still comes out way under budget - even add a tin or tuna, or a few rashers of bacon...

  • Very easily even do puddings and snacks, assuming that you have somethings in like a few eggs, flour, milk etc. WHat have you got in storecupboard wise?

    Firstly

What is in the store cupbaord and the fridge/freezer?

Secondly, read up on rubber chicken and then...

For four my mum used to do

    1. roast chicken (one or two slices each off one breast, wings and two drumsticks) with roasties, yorkshires and veggies

    2. Breast meat with baked potatoes and salad or veggies

    3. Two thighs and any good pickings in a curry, fricassee or risotto

    4. Boil the carcase up, strip off the remaining meat and make a substantial soup for day four. Add rice or pearl barley and veggies. You may need another light course to follow.

Thank you for all your suggestions, you're great!

I'm useless at thinking of things that I could put together, but wish I was better at it.

I have a couple of slices of bacon in fridge, milk, cheese, carrots, turnip, potatoes. Some split peas, barley, tins of hot dogs, tin of chopped tomatoes, some pasta, stock cubes, a few different spices.

    Think that's about it!

pease pudding with the bacon rashers as relish (and a little cheese in the mix) or make wells in the top and add an egg each.

pasta, tomatoes and bacon and some veggies, possibly a few split peas
pasta with arrabaita sauce, bulked out with grated veggies and a few peas instead of lentils.

milk and cheese, with some eggs and pastry -

quiche or egg and bacon flan.

    or pancakes with cheesey filling

    barley

pilaff (sort of rissoto), maybe served with hotdogs (a bit strange but.....

  • I would suggest getting the basics, maybe cheap noodles @ 9p each packet, they are quite tasty, or add your own spices, pasta, cheap brand is only 34p, get a few packs, a small bag of spuds 99p, a big mince from Morrisons is only £2, just brown it and drain the fat off before use, this will probably do two meals, maybe a spag bol and a chilli?? I use passata for my sauce, its 25p a carton, so two cartons only 50p, you could buy a smartprice chicken for around £2 or some cheap cuts of beef £1 - £2 or even a joint for around £3 - £4.

Or, if you really want the bargains, get yourself down to your local supermarket around an hour before close when they will be reducing all the bread/pies/veggies and meat for even better value.

Pasta + bacon + tomato + a bit of grated cheese if desired = a version of pasta amatriciana.

Carrots + turnip + split peas + stock and spices = split pea soup

Tin of hot dogs, chopped up + barley + stock and spices + a bit of grated cheese = hot dog risotto.

There you go, there's three meals already :)
