No, he couldn't. I don't think cash through the mail is even allowed by ebay. I'm pretty sure you're not allowed to list it as a payment method, so there's no way they would entertain any "claims" based on it.0

Why the muppets earlier saying no to cash. No one loses here except the sender, either with Enay or RM.
As for saying Paypal all the way.........wake up son0 -

Yep grandad, (or is it Statler) as I said, if I'm the buyer, paypal all the way, never goes missing, seller will never say it didn't arrive.0 -
I dont see the problem you receive the cash post the item, you dont get the cash, you dont send the item! The buyer wont be covered by ebay etc.. so they cant sting you!0

I worked in another department the other week. I was absolutely astounded, the sheer number of people who had no bank accounts.
Basically, the item they want is £7.00. I explain they can either pay by cheque, card or postal order. Postal order suggestion is far too confusing for some. It was quite an eye opener to me how many people only ever use cash.
sorry to butt in, i'm not an experienced ebayer so have little idea about the antics of scammers but just wanted to reassure you that if the items are inexpensive, the buyer may well be like the people I encountered.
 Alarmingly and a rather strangely, they all seemed to come from the same locality0 -

I agree...this was a while ago but I have had quite a few buyers checkout with the postal order option.. and then I have had an envelope with cash turn up - not always recorded delivery either! with some the cash was loose in the envelope but others had disguised it - taping it in cardboard and bubble wrap etc..
Some people genuinely cannot get credit/debit cards....or simply do not want them... if it's an item they want, then they'd be stupid to try and scam you...at the end of the day...if you don't get genuine notes, then you don't send the item to them!!
Not much different to a cash on collection really - but check out their feedback first....!0 -
Your options:
1. Persist in politely insisting on money order, cheque or similar. If no payment in 7 days open a NPB dispute (or whatever they call it). Downside: You will waste 7 days
2. Contact eBay by emailing them the issue - their Contact Us page. Downside: it'll take 24-48 hours for them to get back (with one of their standard messages no doubt), but at least they'll have a record if anything goes 'wrong' & the buyer tries to pin the blame on you
3. Give him/her the chance to send cash. If nothing turns up in reasonable time, you'll have to do option 1, & relist (don't forget to claim back your listing fee if applicable, or this might be automatic anyway)
Ebay's view about (click on the pics below to view in larger size). A few sub-issues not covered unfortunately:
Paying by Cash
What to do when a buyer wants to change payment methods
P.S. Whether things go to plan (or not) with the present issue, you may want to exclude this buyer from buying from you again, by putting them in your blocked-bidders list. This can be accessed in Bidder/Buyer Management (you must be logged-in to view & make changes). You can take other seller 'safety' measures here as well under 'Buyer Requirements Preferences'. Once changed & saved, these will be the default settings whenever you sell anything. However, they can be changed on an individual basis in the process of listing something, under 'Other things you'd like buyers to know'.
All the best with it all

Don't see the problem, as a seller it doesn't get any better than cash trough the post0

Quick update:
The buyer is still insisting he pays by cash and has stated he has paid over £1000 in total and never had any problems. In light of the fantastic advice given on here I have agreed. One weird thing he sent me a message this morning stating he will post on Monday and then gave me a tracking number. I thought you only received a tracking number once posted??
Anyway thank you all for help especially GoofyGat for a thorough and very helpful answer.0
