Mortgage Reduction Beginner to Novice - The Show Begins

Sorry I'm a bit late to the student loan discussion but I'm interested in this too. I think we pay about £70 interest per year on our loans (jointly) and something ridiculous like £4000 per year interest on the mortgage. I've thought about clearing the student loan with our savings but for me it makes more sense to put that money to overpaying the mortgage. I like the idea of having the student loan gone and I agree its good to do what you want with your money rather than having it taken at source but for me putting that money off the mortgage would be better.
<-- not sure if my logic is right here?!

Hi Ammonite,
I think the conclusion edinburgher and I came to was... if you are close to completing the student loan repayment (like less than 2 years) and you can afford to finish it early then the money that is automatically sent to repay student loan can be re-directed to the mortgage much earlier. Mathematically don't voluntarily repay but psycologically a good way to an instant payrise!Mortgage_Reduction_Novice wrote: »

Speaking of marrows - they're still in the garden, I need to dig up, preserve and plant garlic in the empty space soon.
I made it to 6 weeks with packed lunches... leftover cottage pie today. There's also some nectarine crumble :undecided (an experiment for the bland end of season fruit) leftover for this evening.
In other good news smelly/messy visiting relative bought me a lovely bunch of flowers to thank meand was dropped off at the airport in the small hours:j! I was cleaning the guest room at 5am this morning - windows open, dusting, bicarb applied to carpet (will vacuum after work!), bed stripped and duvet hung to air. I also managed to blitz the bathroom and clean the kitchen bin before I set off for work. I wonder what time my early morning will catch up with me
p.s. GG please note the especially emoticon post for you! I am normally emoticon-less!MFW: Nov 2008 £156k, Jun 2015 £129k, Jun 2017 £114k.0 -
Well done on the 6 weeks of packed lunches - will you be finishing now - or plowing on?
My wife and I get a set amount out of salaries to cover lunches, so it's an incentive to make a packed lunch (anything I don't spend I can save!)
That said, I swear I'll scream if I have another roll with ham, egg and cucumber :rotfl:0
