I Dont Think I Can Do This Anymore!

  • Hello Pixie

Hang on in there. It's very hard coping with debt and weight at the same time. I'm surprised that your Doctor recommended the Cambridge Diet. It has probably improved since I tried it many years ago. There were chewy "chocolate tasting" bars which were its redeeming feature. It did work. I am a serial dieter and have tried them all, apart from the cabbage water.

Are you on any medication for the high cholesterol. DH's cholesterol was high, but his GP was happy until DH came back from an eating and drinking holiday. They both saw the writing on the wall. DH takes a 20 mg Simvastin
tablet every night. It has brought the cholesterol right down to what is considered to be healthy levels.

Hope that the sun is shining at your place today to make you feel better.

Hi pixie, just wanted to throw my 2 pennys worth in if you don't mind! :D

Right, now I'm not claiming to be an expert and I know very little about the diet you sre on BUT ( :p ) this seems to be another one of those quick fix solutions.

If you ask any nutritional/fitness expert the one thing that does work is sensbible eating and exercise!

The problem with the quick fix diets is exactly what happened to you before. You lost a load of weight but didn't know what to do when switching over to "real food"!

The way I look at it is, do you want to lose say 5 stone in the next 6 months (for arguements sake) and then risk putting it all on, OR do you want to lose 5 stone in 12 months but keep it all off?

I don't want to sound like I'm criticising coz I'm not. But the most succesful "diet" is sensible eating and exercise!

Also there is no reason why you can't have the occassional treat every now and then. At the end of the day you only have one life. Well done for wanted to maximise it and live a long and happy one :T but where's the fun in making yourself miserable all the time. Those little treats keep you going and keep you motivated! :D

    Good luck

    Debt-free and Proud!
    Thanks everyone.

I dont want to go on about the diet things loads as this is a debt free board. However Ive never had a good relationship with food, i was underweight by a lot when i was younger, i dont eat any veg or fruit but i dont over eat i just eat loads of carbs and as I dont exercise my weight has just ballooned oh and i like a drink LOL. So i have to find a diet that works for me, everyone is different and cambridge does work for me. I get all the vits i need from the drinks and also my councilor is teaching me about different foods whilst im on the programme so that I can learn to eat properly at the end of the liquid stage, it only lasts a max of four weeks and then i have one meal a day but i have to get that meal right. Fingers crossed i can stick it out. I weighed myself this morning and the scales are moving in the right direction, so ive decided to plan a trip to ellesmere port at may bank holiday so i can maybe treat myself to a new top from the sale shops. a treat to aim for.

Something ive just thought of, if i can succeed on this plan i could try and become a councillor so i could earn a little more money in my spare time at the same time :)

Im not however going to set myself any aims for this week as I need to sort my head out a little. Im not allowing myself to spend anything not even on things budgeted for or that i need, ive become too obsessive about this and its makin gme dull and lifeless. I need to find a balance.

    Thanks again for your support.

  • Hi Pixie, I hope I can offer you some encouragement.

I can understand exactly how you feel; I am in the process of trying to lose a whopping 6 stone. I went from 11 stone to 17 stone in just a few years, spending and eating to blot out my unhappiness. A very downward spiral!

Like my huge debt, the pounds also crept up gradually over the past 10 years. I finally had the lightbulb moment about both when I realised I did not want to carry these two huge burdens with me for the rest of my life.

When I have these phases where I feel I cannot carry on with the DMP or stick to my healthy eating and exercising, I have to tell myself that the cr*p feelings will pass. I try to remember that, no matter how negative I am feeling at the moment, just how scared, panicked, worried, anxious and overwhelmed I was before I took control of my financial situation. This time last year I was a real mess, and now things are so much more in control. I have paid £4,000 off of my debt through payplan, and I have lost nearly 2 stone. Not bad in 12 months. Think of how you would like to be in a year.

So, well done on taking control of your finances and your health. That in itself is great, and don't forget it. You may find that sticking to a liquid diet is unrealistic. You can still lose weight and bring down your cholesterol with solid food!

Becoming healthier should be a positive experience so you stick with it; I like shopping for healthy food bargains and then cooking slimming recipes I have found on the Internet or in magazines. I also enjoy walking my dogs, which clears my head and I feel great afterwards. Perhaps you could review your diet with your practice nurse or GP. I weigh in each week at my surgery and get loads of literature from my practice nurse (she is fantastic) and loads of encouragement and support--for free!!!

If you are feeling too deprived and unhappy, you will be less likely to stick with your DMP and your road to better health. For the sake of your happiness, do think about how great it is that you have taken control over your situations, think about that each month you are making a dent in your debt, and try to find some pleasure (however small) in life. Things WILL get better :)

Hey pixie, tell me to shut up if you want ;) :rotfl: coz I know you said you didn't wanna go on about the diet as it's the DFW board but we can argue with the board guides that it's all relevant! :D

I'm sure there is a "lose weight" thread on here somewhere. I'll try and dig it out for you if you want! You might get better advice and extra support from people in the same boat as you! :)

    HI there Pixie

Just to chuck my 2ps worth in. My OH was diagnosed with High cholestrol a few weeks before Xmas. A bolt out of the blue hes only 28! but his diet has been pretty awful up to meeting me ( lol) hes on daily meds as well.

Ask your GP how long you are meant to stick with a liquid diet for. thats bound to be miserable, and untenable in even the short term!

We have found loads of ways to eat our fave foods healthily ( not pizza though yet lol) but we have burgers, spag bols, and plenty of veg ( veg curries, lasagne) but do them minus the cream, the cheese and other saturated fats. and like you OH never ate veg. But if you have to do 5-7 a day, well we give it our best stab and have 5. A tin of baked beans is 2.

Suffice to say, we have saved a fortune! No greasy meat, not really much processed food at all. I made a cracking Strawberry baked alaska the other day with some cheap strawbs from the market with low fat ice cream in OH had 2 slices of it got in his 2 portions of fruit just from that!!!

Do PM me or find me on messenger if you want some very easy, cheap and healthy recipes, specifically for cholestrol sufferers! Were hoping the diet will do the bulk of the work so that OH doesnt have prescription charges forever LOL
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

    Hi Pixie

I think your aim for this week is to find a balance. If you were councilling, and someone came to you saying what you are saying....what would you say to them?! Always a good way to see that your own advice, (which we don't like to listen to) is often good advice. Yours will be too. Regarding the diet, everyone suits differnet diets, so if that one is yours you're stuck with it for now. But you said you need to know how to live with it after you've lost the weight, so there is an incentive that needn't cost money and will start producing something that will give you something to look forward to. A future eating plan, all the foods you can and can't eat etc. It may help you work through your relationship with food. Reward yourself with something different, not food. ie if I manage to do that I can have 5 minutes more with tv, I can have an extra 5 minutes sleep, I can let myself off washing the dishes straight after dinner.

However, it sounds like you need to find other activities, so that you aren't even thinking about eating. Walking, reading, cleaning (hey some people like it, and I'm meant to be doing it!) writing as some. If you are soooo busy time will pass and you'll stop thinking about food. Is there a library near you? are you creative? have you got junk to get rid of? don't watch your ebay auctions, let them finish and then surprise yourself by checking when it's all done and dusted.

From a planning perspective, write a list of things you can do, things you want to do, things you like, things you don't like, learn who you are so that you don't feel down about not being able to eat nice things!! I'm not explaining it very well, but have other distractions around you. Plot your family tree.

All good free stuff that will hopefully remove focus from your money and food diet.

Good luck, I think you are doing really well, and although it may be a long haul, we are all here to learn, and we learn better overtime (damn is that just me, cause I'm so forgetfull first time round :o )

    Big hugs
