Thanks but I can only see mountain bikes on their site plus 3 speed town bikes. No in between type bikes like the Nouveau or the other Raleigh town bike I saw which was more expensive but did have an aluminium frame - the Metro LX.

I'd personally look at something with an aluminuim frame , the reduction in weight especially on hills was a plus

There are few new bikes worth buying for less than £200 if you intend making cycling part of a fitness routine or commute.

Decathlon bikes take some beating for vfm, great design, components, service and long warranties.

Trust me I'm a proper cyclist hidden in here......

I totally agree. You won't find much better value for money elsewhere, and they have bikes to suit all pockets. I almost bought one from there last week, but I'm a brand snob so I got a Kona instead.

And like a lot of people are saying, spend the most you can afford on a bike. It makes a real difference.

Forget full suspension, it's just a gimmick unless you're going to spend some serious money, and are into downhill racing.

Dunno how much you want to spend Ellie, but the Carrera Subway 1 comes in at £230 - although they occasionally have discounts on the Carrera brand.

It's an aluminium frame that looks a bit like a mountain bike but is designed for the road with thinner smooth tyres and seatpost suspension. More adjustable setup than the Raleigh too so should get a comfier fit. It gets a good write up from what I've seen too - I'm about to go for the male version by the way! I'd advise going in and having a look and try sitting on a few to see what you're comfortable with.

If your budget can stretch to it specialised hardrock sport is a great entry level bike with a good frame that you can add to over time. Bought mine from evans cylcles for around £260.00 with 10% off that they offer from time to time.

Yes, I saw the reviews for it and bought husband the male one. He hasnt ridden it much as he has been ill since his birthday. I cant find reviews for any of the Raleigh bikes but Carrera is a Halfords own brand and people are being sniffy about Halfords I find. Thought maybe a Raleigh was a better bet. Wouldnt know a Kona if it fell on my head. The thing with the Carrera is that like all mountain type bikes you are bending forward to grip the handlebars rather than sitting upright. My back would probably protest after a bit.

People are really sniffy about Halfords, and you do hear some horror stories. But that is almost always about the customer service. The Carrera bikes actually get a good write up...and you can easily avoid the customer service problem by paying your local bike store £10 or £20 to give it a once over.

Know what you mean about riding position and backs...a problem that has kept me off a bike for about a year. But the handlebars on the Carrera have a tilt adjustment so you can have them higher up like on a more traditional bike - partly why I'm goin with it.

Also, you would have matching his n hers...! ;)
