MONEY MORAL DILEMMA. Would you give up a £50 train seat for a pregnant woman?

I msut say i'm shocked and disappointed about how selfish, money grabbing and hard hearted so many people have been! I really thought the majority of people on this site were focussed on working against big corporate money-grabbers and finding a different and better way to live the lives we like.
A heavily pregnant woman, who FOR NO SPECIFIED REASONS has no seat (funny how we discuss overcrowding and a woman without a seat in the same postings) surely is in the most deserving position for a seat. If you are in good health what really stops you? As all of us who travel long distance regularly also know that trains are rarely overcrowded for the entire duration, so its not like it would ever really be an entire 5 hour stand. A £50 ticket is nothing in comparison to the comfort that could be provided, for two people. Surely common decency teaches us that?
Obviously I would give up my seat. I'm not saying that i would be overjoyed, but i know i would feel a lot better seeing her sit than watching everybody else trying to ignore her. How would you feel?0 -

However, it's simply not part of the question that was put to us to answer.
There's all sorts of highly unnecessary melodramatic assumptions been going on in this thread - the woman didn't ask to be pregnant because she was raped, she's on her last legs with a life-threatening illness or six, she can't walk, the child's life is in danger, she's in labour and now she's escaping a violent partner and has a dying relative to boot. I'm sure that if any information of that nature was actually included in the original question then chances are the thread would have gone in a completely different direction.0 -

Did you even read the question?0 -

And what of the punter who has reserved a seat for a SPECIFIC reason which was actually in the original thread?
Obviously moral high ground claimed, donation to charity on the way and opinion formed of those who dare to think they reserve a seat for a reason.0 -
My point was that the wording many people have chosen to use is incorrect - you can BOOK a ticket, but not PRE-BOOK a ticket. The latter is an incorrect use of language. It's like saying pre-warned (it's impossible to post-warn, because to warn is necessarily in advance of an event - in the same way as booking - so there's no need to use the pre- prefix) - it's simply wrong.
Wow, maybe this is why pregnant lady couldn't get a seat. Lets hope she doesn't get pre eclampsia.:rotfl:0 -

A lot of people put pregnant women on a pedestal responsible for the 'miracle' of creating life (no, it is a biological process, albeit a bit complex) and making sure the human race continues (no, having kids because they want them, not because they're helping the rest of us out). It is amazing the way some people turn to goo at the sight, sound or otherwise of children, particularly babies.
And there is always an assumption about the 'poor' (read disabled/incapable) pregnant woman assumed to be suffereing. Yes it is difficult but as others have said it is not an illness or a disability as it has been automatically been referred to in some posts. I find that quite insulting as though being pregnant renders you incapable and addles your brain. I have known some women who thought pregnancy was great, they felt well right until the end.
It remains a kind gesture to offer the seat but those who don't are not all mad axe murderers in the making.Cheap and cheerful. Preferably free. :T LBM - more a gradual rude awakening.

Definitely! She needs it more. Having been pregnant before, I know how it feels.0

I agree with you englishmac. I mentioned further back in the thread about how the the most selfish thing you could ever do is decide to have a child. I didn't use the word 'selfish' in a derogatory sense - it's a personal decision and therefore a selfish one. I've never heard anyone saying "I think I'll get pregnant in case there aren't enough people to pay my pension when I retire" or "I think I'll get pregnant because I want to do my bit to keep the human race going". People have babies because they want one - not for any other reason - and that's how it should be. It is self-serving and can never be disguised as anything else. I don't understand why a few people in this thread have made out that having kids is so much more than it actually is. Billions of women have given birth successfully after all.0
