True - although technically they still have a choice, they don't have to go ahead with the pregnancy if they don't want to for any reason.
Ah so the person on the busy train could be off to hospital to have termination?

No, she'd be much too late if that were the case. But we are talking about the British rail system, she probably set out six months ago :D

Either that or she's headed home after a 45 hour shift as a whipping boy up a coal mine sweatshop chimney making clothes for 2p a week and feeding 5,000 people on a box of fish fingers. Yes, yes that sounds more plausible :D

I would let a heavily pregnant woman have my seat certainly. I cant believe how mean some people are here. Some people dont use the trains often and would not automatically pay in advance for a reserved seat and may not realise how busy it could be at a particular time of day etc. Sounds like most of you are the same type of people who wouldnt step in if someone was being abused or mugged either and hide behind your newspapers. You selfish lot are partly to blame for the degradation of public society. Shame on you, cowards.

My comment about you people ranting at a disabled person for not giving up her seat? Wasn't referring to me. - I was talking about Tiger_greeneyes, who has the same chronic pain condition that I do, and a couple of you did have a go directly at her, which I definitely don't think is fair.

Not a coward, not mean, not selfish. Just practical and a bit of a cynic, tyvm.

if there is only one pregnant women and the whole train offer this women their seat

    will this then cause arguements?

will those who talk about karma and teaching their kids and feel the need to comment about those that didnt offer their seat be still good

i think all pregnant women should carry a fold away stool that means they can stop and rest whereever they need to without making other people roll over and pander to their everyneed .

oh look at me im pregnant ... everyone must do what i want i demand someone gives up their seat ..

she should not expect it she should be offered it thiers a difference ....

Slightly off topic, but I would like to point out how nasty this thread has become.

If you've made a past which makes a personal attack on somebody else, you should be ashamed of yourself.

You should also consider that nobody responds well to bile and that you have decreased the effectiveness of your own argument, whichever view you were taking.

Finally I would like to summarise the facts as they seem to be so far.

We don't know why the lady is travelling or whether she knew in advance that she would be.

We therefore don't know whether she would have had the opportunity to reserve a seat in advance.

A number of train companies will automatically upgrade her to first class, assuming that the service has a first class section, which many do not.

If she isn't upgraded then either a seat is offered, or she asks for one or she stands.

There is nothing other than politeness preventing her from asking.

There is little other than self interest preventing those already sitting from offering to stand.

Self interest isn't always a bad thing - you just need the appropriate amount at the appropriate time and in the appropriate way. If it wasn't for self interest then when that homeless chap next to the cash machine the other day asked me for some change, I would have emptied my account for him. Self interest prevented me from doing that.

Irrespective of the merits of the "she chose to get pregnant" or "she could have booked" etc arguments, consider this. If she fell / fainted and lost the baby, your inaction could cause you (rightly or wrongly) to feel very guilty for a very long time - a life potentially lost.

As I said in my first post - I might sit there feeling grumpy for very short while (or more likely I'd be in a world of my own and not even notice her for a few minutes) but no, I couldn't allow her to remain standing. Even if she refused the seat, I'd vacate it any way.

So when did the original question change from being about a pregnant woman not booking a train seat to someone is being abused or mugged and the rest of us are shameful cowards and partly to blame for the degredation of public society because you have convinced yourself that we'll hide behind our newspapers?

Bizarre. You're wrong by the way. I don't read newspapers. They're a waste of money when you have a broadband connection and a tv.

    Oh the drama :rotfl:

Well if you're on the train, there's often a free Metro lying around. ;)

This is true. I prefer to read books though - stuff about puppy stomping mainly. I quite like to point and laugh at unfortunate people who walk funny or look like they're on the verge of keeling over. I recommend watching a person wearing dark glasses and sporting a white stick, they can provide endless amusement. I generally spend my whole journey wondering who I can happy-slap or relieve of their purse or phone. Sometimes I even shove people in wheelchairs under buses or off the station platform. It's just the way I am

That scenario wasn't part of the dilemma we were given.

Why do some people (in general I mean, I'm not picking anyone out) not understand that if the question was different, it would have warranted a different answer?
