Yeah I understand that the system doesn't update till about 3.30 in the afternoon with Bank of Scotland but if a S/O or D/D is set up to come out on a specific date then surely they can't take it before then. In my case they both showed on my online statement and had the next days date beside them. I remember a few years ago there was a bank holiday weekend, think it was easter but can't remember my mortgage wasn't due until 28th of the month which was the monday, when I went to the bank on the thursday 24th they'd taken my mortgage money out. When I contacted them they said that because it was a holiday weekend they could take it out earlier. I don't get paid earlier because it's a holiday weekend so my wages didn't go in until the friday as normal. Lucky I had enough in the bank to cover the mortgage but I'd have been really angry if this had caused me to incur charges.

as far as the question about odd £1 or £2 disappearing and reappearing,:

in some situations, often online purchases, as soon as you start the 'buy' process the supplier system does a trial debit of a small sum (say £1 or £2) to your a/c to see if your a/c is ok. if not it will not let you continue, if its ok you continue as normal. You would not be aware it is doing this as its happening in parallel with your purchase. Your purchase continues as usual and you are debited by the expected amount. At a later date they credit your account with the £1.
Frankly this seems like theft to me. However, I've only read about it happening but i'm hoping that it will happen to me so I can make a proper fuss about it (how sads that?)

£2 disappears out of my account every time I do an online Tesco shop, as soon as I process the order £2 disappears for a couple of days and then reappears. I wonder if it's like a 'deposit' for the delivery slot..I always get it back and then just get my normal charge for the shopping on the day I get it delivered.

Now that's very very interesting because I do a Tesco shop online every month and I did one yesterday to be delivered end of month - and £2 disappeared today. Tesco don't say they will do that though. Very strange!

  • Maybe it's a check to see if the payment will go through.

    anniek1969.

the key thing is what date was against the transaction...if it was the thursday then indeed you would have been charged if you were overdrawn, but usually it is the correct date i.e. the next monday.
i've never heard of a SO going out early because the setup usually specifically says on or after xx date. with a DD of course its grapped by whoever you are paying so it depends what you agreed with them when you set it up; but again I've never experienced it like that.

    Hi

I'm with Barclays and after reading this thread I checked my available balance. Yep, you guessed it £2 is missing!! I have a debit pending (for payment to my Barclaycard) for £34, and there is a £36 difference between actual and available balances!
Hmmm....its's annoying especially when you watch your money very closely. I'm now worrying incase its not my barclaycard payment thats pending and its something else that cost £36 that I've forgotten/not budgetted for!

    CLAPTON,

I've never heard of a S/O going out early either, didn't bother me as there was money to cover it but just wonder if they would have let me off with charges if there wasn't. If it happens again I think I'll make a complaint to the bank.

As everyone who's in debt knows, every penny counts and when these £1 and £2 go missing for a couple of days it does make you worry and think there must be something else you bought that you forgot about. If they are just checking that your account is ok they should be able to refund the money immediately when the proper transaction goes through.

I bank with lloyds tsb and this happens a lot dd's going out on sunday even when not due till mon!!! (but they always show mondays date!!)
Have never got round to querying it as of yet never caused a prob. but as you say if i was relying on F/A (which gets paid in on mon)to cover these bills what then!!

I also bank with Lloyds tsb and notice the same thing on a sunday

I have also had the problem with money 'pending' in my account only to find that a few days later its resolves itself. Of course the banks are always right!!! NOT!!! They insist that I have spent money somewhere and forgotten about it

Its also happened with my Halifax bank. The only common link between my two accounts is that they are both Electron. Maybe this is the problem.
  • There are some companies that do a trial debit then immediate credit to make sure your account is legitimate (trying to think where I last saw it - I think PayPal used to do this on application for an account, but they tell you they are going to do it and I think it's only the once). Maybe it's becoming more widespread.

A few months back I had a problem with my HSBC account, every debit card transaction was charged twice!! It can't have been a retailer mistake since it was all the transactions, from many different shops. I didn't check my account so regularly then as I do now and I only noticed after they had put it all back, two full days it had happened for and I'd spent quite a bit in those two days! Luckily my 0% overdraft was on hand to cope but if I didn't have that, can you imagine the fight to get back any charges?

I wonder if anyone who works in a bank has any ideas? Too much automation of systems is scary when the bank itself doesn't know whats going on!!

This used to happen with my Abbey Visa delta and I was not happy with abbeys explanation so I cancelled the card.
Say I had balance of £100 with £100 available balance. I go and spend £15 on the card. The available balance would drop straight to £70. Within a day the balance would be £85 but the available would still be £70. A day or two later the available would be £85.
Their explanation was to blame the card company (visa) who insisted on holding onto a matching amount to cover the transaction while it went through.
Obviously if you are using your card every day then your available balance would never be right leading to potential problems with bouncing cheques, returned direct debits etc.
They said there was no way around it so I got rid of the visa delta and got a visa electron instead.
It still happens now and then but now that I bank online I always keep the available balance at a usable figure to keep on top of it.
